Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Bosque Ampay is a isolated forest remnant. It is unique, hosting several species of bird only found in this one area. It is easily reached from Abancay via taxi (NS10) to the admin building. There is a NS5 entrance fee that comes with a good quality map of the forest. I only hiked up as far as the first lagoon - despite cycling up and down the Andes many times, this was a tough hike that did more damage to my legs that any cycle I have done.

Birding was excellent, collecting almost all the important species here, some which were locally quite common. Despite the area being protected, there must be farms along the path for I had a rather close encounter with an unhappy bull being pushed and pulled down the steep paths by some farmers.

Paths are good quality but hellishly steep and at this altitude rather time consuming. Of the going up was tough though, coming down will certainly give your muscles a good going over. Expect a very sore set of legs at the end of the day.

Taxi drivers will give you their number to call for collection when you are done hiking. Alternatively you can walk back to town, but be aware - there are a maze of roads and I got quite lost, but all roads downhill will get you to Abancay eventually!

This hike is not just a day hike. Plan to camp. Winter camping gear is reccomended. Plenty of water available throughout the park. No open fires. Trail is not well marked and breaks up. Lots of rural people living in park. This park is not really well known and you can hike here without seeing another tourist. Especially in the higher altitudes. The hike starts out at 2900 meters and the first lake is at about 3250 meters. A fast hiker can make it in an hour. Spend the night there and get used to the altitude. Make the second lake on day two and the summit on day three, returning to the second lake (that is spring fed) for camp on the third night. Returning to the info center on the morning of the fourth day. If you try to do it in 2 days, you will be running.

We started with a taxi from Abancay, then hiked to the first two lagoons, turned aroundand came back. Took a total of about 6 hours, but on the return there was no way to get a taxi, so had to walk about another mile (in a thunderstorm) toward the city till we found one.

The first lagoon is small and stagnant, but the second one, Laguna Usphaq'ocha, is absolutely gorgeous, well worth the difficulty of the hike. Just be aware that lagoon is 12,600 ft, and the trail just goes on climbing from there, for lowlanders like us it was quite tough! The whole time we were there never saw another hiker, it is very peaceful. If you are in Abancay for a day, highly recommend it

We were there on a trip with 60 12-year olds and they made the first laguna in about 1.5 hours. Sadly lots of the children played there up to exhaustion and we couldn't hike up to the second laguna. But the scenery was beautiful, stunning and worth every drop of sweat. We saw lots of beautiful plants and butterflies. There are apparently also lots of animals, but you can guess that with 60 children it's hard to be quiet and attract animals...Very nice and relatively easy hike, good for families up to the first laguna or for hikers to go higher up.

It's a strenuous uphill hike. The scenery is beautiful but not worth paying six times more than a local. Why does Peru gouge foreign tourists?

Very close to town but you don't have to walk for long to feel as though you're far away from civilisation. Cost us S.15 in a cab to get there. It took us an hour to walk to the first lake - it's uphill most of the way but very pretty. We didn't have time to get to the second lake as it was already lunchtime and we didn't want to be walking home in the dark. Had to walk back into town from the info centre as there were no cabs so took us about 4 hours in total to walk to lake and then back into town. Beautiful walk, will definitely be back to camp up there.
