Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Very service-minded personnel in one of my favourite Enoteca’s. A fantastic collection of wine (for sale…) including a large collection of Sassicaia (various vintages going years back). Was offered a glass of red wine (actually leftover from a wine tasting earlier that day we visited the Enoteca) of Brunello di Montalcino Riserva’s - winner was a €200 wine, extremely delicious. Definitely worth a visit - also their restaurant in the Enoteca.

What a place! Be sure to visit! Amazing selection of wines (for all budgets). Sergio could not be more helpful or more professional. We had a wonderful experience. While some may consider it a bit pricey, it really depends on what you choose to taste and the type of memory you wish to create for yourself. Rick Homer and Mary Homer (Victoria BC Canada)

While we visited several wineries during our visit to Tuscany, Enoteca la Fortezza was a fabulous way to experience many wineries side by side in one seating. Sergio was our host for the afternoon. My husband and I chose to do Reserve level tastings. Sergio selected 12 different Brunellos for our tastes. I tasted my husband's, and he tasted mine. Sergio absolutely nailed the selections! We shipped a mixed case home and look forward to (hopefully) seeing Sergio on our next visit in December! His personality and expertise made our day during our visit to the town of Montalcino!

In the middle of the Castle of Montalcino, there is an outstanding wine dealer. I can recommend the store. Great service and advice (a bit salesy though), but they have superb wines, also aged ones, at ok prices.

A number of sources cited La Fortezza as a good place to sample and buy wine. Set in a old fortress, it definitely has its charms. It was our first wine tasting on our trip to Chianti and we ended up buying a few bottles. We were even so enthusiastic that we enquired about shipping the wine back to Singapore (prices includes shipping).
Well, thanks goodness we decided to 'shop around' before deciding on the shipping, and that's when we realized that we have paid between 20 - 50% more for the bottles. Well, there's your free shipping I guess!
I would recommend just browsing and don't bother even paying for the wine tasting. The quantity per sample is a small sip (even lesser than what we normally get at vineyards that provide tasting for free). Wine shops are dime a dozen in Montalcino. Shop around and you'll discover much better value elsewhere.

WINE-TASTING
This place is the best place in town for wine tasting (we tried several places and local friends confirmed our impression). We were welcomed by Luciano who lead us into the most amazing wine-tasting experience in years. It was just Eur 30. We discovered that Luciano is a bona-fide expert who is also a wine-critic and "wine journalist". We did not even book the wine tasting, we were just lucky to meet him.
He chose for us wines from the year 2010 ("horizontal" wine tasting: different wines from the same year). Year 2010 is the best year for Brunello in the past 50 or more years. We were amazed about the nuances from lighter more fruity wines to more complex and multi-dimensional ones (the best Brunello does not taste good after 5 years, it needs to age). We traveled through flavors and shades of ruby... and history. We learned all about the Biondi Santi family and the Brunello production.
What a treat! A unique hedonistic-didactic experience.
We traveled with small children and Luciano was super patient with us.
Shipping is free (worldwide) if one buys 12 bottles. And after such a great class we confidently took advantage of this offer.
Thank you Signor Luciano. We will be back next year.

We came to try some nice brunello's in Montalcino and thought the castle was a really nice place to do this. At first the tasting prices were extremely high, but I can live with that because they will else get to many pointless tastings. So we got some nice advice what to try and we found some good wines to bring home. We bought the bottles and walked back into the village where I went in to another tasting place and what do I see: The same bottles I bought, form the same year for almost half the price. So choose yourself, but they won't see me ever again! It also ruined my Montalcino experience (Montepulciano is much nicer!)

Our wine tasting at the Enoteca was well done in July 2017. As a result we purchased over $4000 in wines to be shipped to our home in the US.
After returning to the US, I found that for many of the wines I had been overcharged. After a long email negotiation, the Enoteca adjusted the order and made the appropriate price concessions.
When the wines were shipped in November, the negotiated changes to the order were not made in the shipment. This resulted in an overpayment of 45 Euros which the Enoteca has not credited. American Express has made good on the bill dispute but the experience and attempted obfuscation by the Enoteca and its staff are completely unacceptable. Visit this beautiful wine country in Italy but do not buy from this organization!

A visit to Montalcino would not be complete without tasting as many Brunellos as you can...and the perfect place to do this is the Fortezza. The variety in taste, age and price of the Brunellos we tasted over 2 1/2 hours (it started storming heavily as we began tasting) was tremendous. Sergio was attentive and informative and provided a relaxed tasting experience over the entirety of our long stay. The free shipping to the US is amazing and I can't wait to drink my delicious Brunellos with friends in Dallas. If in Montalcino, you must visit the Fortezza.

For the love of good wine, the price tag doesn't matter. But the experience doesn't comprise of only the taste of wine but service, helpfulness and extra informational tit bits that the wine connoisseur can offer.
Personally speaking, a place becomes A+ for me because of the staff and their service. Unfortunately, the staff here was at best ignorant and not really helpful. At first I was willing to cut them slack for the English - Italian language barrier but then came the service, which was blah.
We chose not to do the wine tasting and just opt for a glass each. However, even with that it was blatantly obvious that they don't really care about customer service.
I was disappointed as this was mentioned in Rick Steven's guide and the castle grounds made the perfect scenery for sipping. Unfortunate for us, may be they were having a bad day but I won't go back here again. There are several good wine tasting options available in the town - so go with your gut feel and get out if you feel they are lacking customer service.
