Perissa Black Sand Beach
Perissa Black Sand Beach

About
This idyllic beach in Santorini is famous for its black sand, the result of the volcanic activity that created the island. Calm conditions and crystal-clear waters teeming with fish make for excellent snorkeling and swimming. Enjoy a relaxing day of bathing in the Mediterranean sun and stay until the evening to catch the spectacular sunset over the Aegean sea, framed by the Mesa Vouno mountain. The beach is easily accessible from Fira, the capital of the Greek island. Summer is the busiest season—rather than rushing around, book a seaside hotel in Perissa town to enjoy this spot of paradise to the fullest. – Tripadvisor

- Paolo T45 contributionsBeautiful in June, but then?Very long beach with options for everyone, equipped with sunbed and umbrella (paying only for drinks) or free with partially tree-lined stretches close to the road. Found real black sand with tiny pebbles, not pebbles, mountain side. A little too much noise for my tastes (loud music from the clubs) and it's the beginning of June... Fresh and transparent water.Visited June 2024Travelled with familyWritten 2 June 2024
- Mary R9 contributionsNice beachBeautiful black sand beach. The beach itself is pretty rocky and the sand gets very hot under the midday sun. I recommend having water shoes/ sandals to walk around in. Great time with family there.Visited June 2024Travelled with familyWritten 27 June 2024
- christina cSan Diego, California19 contributionsGreat beach!Great place to stay, went back and forth deciding whether to stay on the east side of Santorini(caldera side) or the west side & decided on an airb&b on Perissa beach. Best decision!! Beautiful beach with lots of shops & restaurants. We took the bus to the towns we wanted to visit which was easy and cheap! There were small markets to buy food to make breakfast each morning before heading out. We did a sunset cruise and they picked us up and dropped us back off which was nice. Had a great trip!Visited April 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 1 July 2024

Crystal clear and calm sea. We stayed for 2 days at the Aqua bathroom: free sunbeds and umbrellas as long as you eat in the bathroom restaurant (which has great food at fair prices: in 4 we spent between 55 and 60 euros).Visited July 2024Travelled with familyWritten 21 July 2024

Easy to find parking and super economic beaches. We paid 10€ for an umbrella and two sunbeds in the third row.Visited July 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 23 July 2024

- Fngrsxd160 contributionsBlack coarse sand beachBeautiful beach with the grand backdrop of the Thera mountain/hill dotted with plenty of excellent restaurants and taverns. Beach huts get booked early in the day (10€) during summer, with a nice relaxing day spent on the beach. The walk along the Perissa to Perivolos beaches is lovely too, but not in the fierce midday sun. The local bus will drop you off right near the beach. There are water sports like jet ski, tubing, parasailing available as well.Visited July 2024Travelled with familyWritten 25 July 2024
- Jeferson A1 contributionPerissaI had the opportunity to visit Santorini in 2023 with my friends, Vanderson, Simonik, Jocicleide, Railanae and Luana. I went to a boat trip with my friends around the Santorini caldera, and we visited the hot springs. you should visit Perissa beach, it is one of the most beautiful I have ever seen, with crystal clear waters and pleasant temperature. I recommend you also try the fresh salads and delicious fish served at the Fratzeskos tavern restaurant.Visited December 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 27 July 2024
- Elisabeth WPorto Alegre, RS38 contributionsWorth the experience!Very interesting experience, but not to stay long. The black sand is very hot and for the sea bath it passes by sliding stone. On the other hand, the bars put a set of sunbeds and 2 chairs, for 20 euros. If you consume the value or more, do not pay.Visited August 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 22 August 2024
- TravlintoneChippenham, United Kingdom786 contributionsA chilled atmosphereIt’s easy to imagine Perissa as the small fishing village it must have been not so long ago. It’s USP (Unique Selling Point) as a tourist destination is that it possesses one of Santorini’s few sandy beaches although fans of golden sands will be disappointed by the course, black volcanic sand; no sandcastles here I’m afraid. In fact, during our entire holiday we never once went into the sea preferring the convenience of our hotel swimming pool. And there certainly lots of hotel pools; even many of the small places have them. The charm of Perissa is that, despite its continued growth, it still feels ‘small scale’. There are no high rise developments with most properties being only two stories. Most Perissa accommodation caters for the middle/higher end adult market. There are few attractions for children and young teenagers who may well be better served in other places. Likewise, there is more late night entertainment is areas such as Kamari, Fira and Oia. There are, however, a huge range of restaurants and cocktail bars ranging from mid to high prices with, unsurprisingly, seafood and fish a speciality. Many Restaurants serve until 23:00 with bars operating into the early hours. If your idea of a Greek holiday is high activity days and dancing the night away it’s perhaps best to look elsewhere but if you want a laidback Greek holiday with good food, Perissa is a great choice.Visited August 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 22 August 2024

I've stayed in Perissa near the black beach and totally recommend visiting it, when your main focus is to relax, swim/ do some water sports (like stand-up paddling, jet ski, water skiing, parasailing, ...).
The water is turquois, the waves are strong, but not too bad and there are a lot of good restaurants and coffee houses next to the beach, which offer free use of the beach chairs (like for example "South Wind restaurant", where I've stayed most of the times).
The volcanic sand can become very hot around midday and the pebbles in the water are pretty big, but not too sharp. It definitely helps to bring some (swim)shoes.
For families: the waves could be maybe too strong for small kids and the water becomes deep quickly, so bring some swim help if needed.
Exploring Santorini: there's a direct bus from Perissa to Fira (capital of the island) every hour. Cost: 2,20€/way. From fira there are lots of buses that all major spots on the island.

Absolutely love this beach, visited this beach for full day on a few occasions during my holiday and it was great for swimming, snokerling, and sun loungers were lovely. Swim shoes are not essential (loads of people don't bother with them) but I found them great when walking on the hot sand so I didn't swim without them! Sun lounger prices vary between restaurants/cafes but we stuck to the loungers that were 10 euro each as long we ordered food and drink from the relevant restaurant.. Some can be up to 25 euro per lounger but skip those expensive ones and get a lounger which are free as long as you order a coffee /drink from the associated cafe/restaurant. Also, bathrooms available in the associated cafe linked to your sunbed 👍👍

Lovely really long clean beach. Plenty of room for everyone to sit, whether on organised chairs or on your towel. Refreshing water, crystal clear. Buy a face mask to see the rock formation or different fish. The restaurants/cafe bars are plenty with anything from breakfast to dinner.

We really enjoyed our afternoon at the beach. We came over from Imerovigli because I think it's important to see areas outside of their major tourists attractions because those alone don't usually give you a true sense of an area. Santorini is known for Oia, but it's so much more than just that. Loved that we could get chairs from the area restaurants to enjoy. And loved their little elastic straps on the chairs to hold the towels in place (we don't have those in the States as far as I have seen - included a picture), but other posters are correct in that black fine pebbly sand is HOT - wear water shoes or do the sand dance where you hop from shaded chair to shaded chair until you reach the water.
Note - we took a bus from Fira to get there, but got a taxi to take us back. Taxi is more expensive but not by much since we were a family of 4 and it takes less time than the bus.

Large stones on the beach make it difficult to walk and take away from the experience. The sea bed is extremely slippery throughout the whole area which presents risk of falling and breaking limbs. Otherwise the beach looks lovely with majestic rock rising on one side of the beach, there are a number of restaurant owners who would follow you in an attempt to convince you to use their services. This could be very annoying. Also in order to use an umbrella you would have to consume food and drinks at the restaurants which makes it difficult to plan and budget. Easy to get to by bus.

This beach area seems loaded with small hotels and restaurants along the road next to the beach. Lounge chairs appear to be assigned to the specific hotel or restaurant. Sand is coarse and hot. The water is clear and cool. We typically left our sandals at waters edge or got a lounge close to the water. We had nice lazy days.

So we had lunch in Philopos restaurant and they have these umbrellas under which you can get some sun and food. The food was great but the best experience was the black sand. It's a little coarse than the white sand we see all over the world and it acts as a natural exfoliant. Walking in the beach for 15 mins you feel so awesome. Ofcourse you need to take a dip in the sea too.....

We’d taken a look at both the Red Beach and White Beach near Akrotiri on the southwest end of Santorini on our day trip. Perissa was located on the south east and the black sand beach extended from the base of the massive Mesa Vuono headland abruptly jutting into the sea; the beach merged into Perivolos Beach and together this was a 7+ kilometer beach. We did not get to set foot on the other 2 beaches which were not accessible by land especially in winter. The Red, White and Black beaches were reflections of the volcanic rock that had been eroded to give rise to the sand that formed these beaches.
Unlike the other 2 beaches Perissa Black Sand beach was easily accessible. There was a long line of dining establishments, souvenir stalls and beach gear stores along the beach almost all of which were closed in early February. It was easy to see how this beach could get crowded during the peak season. I can only imagine how hot the black sand would get in the summer; it was fairly warm underfoot even in winter. I can imagine the “happening” scene here during high season with the numerous dining establishment available to visitors.
It would be worth a visit during the warmer months of the year.

Lovely, quiet beach with plenty of room to swim or sunbathe. As everyone has said, there are a lot of small restaurants and bars down by the beach. We took the bus from Fira (leaves every 20 minutes or so) which cost us 2,20 per person. Ride was about 30 minutes and they dropped us off right near the beach. We paid 10,00 for two chairs and an umbrella. Overall it was a great day!

Beautiful, calm water, gorgeous black sand beach but wear shoes. You absolutely can not walk on it barefoot - so hot! We went to Barkia beach restaurant and were able to get 4 free beach chairs with umbrella. If you sit on the front row, you pay 60 per set. Other sites on the beach had really nice umbrella set ups as well but require reservations. Forty One was recommended to us but we did not have a reservation and there were none beach chairs open.

Is there still volleyball around here? We will be staying at Roula Villa, and wondering on some good suggestions. Thanks!

Is it safe to leave my bag with money, phone etc. on the sun beds while I swim?

Caution should be advised everywhere but I don't expect you would have a problem. I left tablets/mobile and money but I was close by.
Enjoy.

Hi all,
I'm going to be at Perissa beach in mid-September, do I require water shoes or will flip flops suffice for the sand? Will we have to wear shoes in the ocean as well?
Also, can anybody suggest a reliable cab company? I have several tour booked but I'd like to schedule a ride to Oia to explore on my own. Thanks!
Written 27 August 2019
Either will suffice - the sand is quite hot so as long as you have something on your feet while walking you should be alright.
Cabs are expensive on the island and try to rip you off. I would suggest either renting a car from the airport or using the local buses - which are cheap, but less reliable and come once every 20-30 minutes but go everywhere on the island.

What is weather like in October?
Written 24 August 2019
Early October should still be warm and sunny. Towards the end of the month getting cooler

Hi,
Are there some free sun beds on the Perisso beach, providing you drink in the bar ?
Thanks
Written 18 August 2019
I’m not sure. There’s the rule “lunch here and free sun beds”.
My girlfriend and I were in one of the southern beach and they explicit told us “First or second line sun beds free if you eat here. If you think you’ll go away in two or three hours, you can take the last line”. But I’m not sure everyone use this rules.

Ho letto che effettuando una consumazione i lettini e ombrelloni sono gratis. Ma solo in alcuni bagni. Mi potete consigliare il nome di un bagno dove poter pranzare e avere i lettini gratis? Grazie mille

Ml I went in May and the black sand was too hot to manage even with flipflops, but it looked lovely for swimming MN
Written 10 August 2019
How was the water temp at Perissa Beach in lateish May? We are staying there starting May 22nd - 26th this year and wondering if it will be warm enough for swimming or if we will spend all our time tooling around in our car...both are good options but it would be nice if we can swim.
Written 15 April 2019
Take your trunks! The sea will be warming up at that time but it will not be at it's warmest that happens a little later int he year.
Whatever you do enjoy yourselves - a lovely island but watch out for the crowds in Oia at sunset.
