I love fortified towns. This one has a lot of interesting history, which we wouldn't have picked up had we not taken the audio guide. The audio guide itself does go on a bit in places and there are long periods of just music which...More

Montreuil-sur-Mer used to host the General Headquarters of the British Empire army from 1916 to 1919. An exhibition provides a full overview of this engagement in this historical site. A lot to learn. The ramparts give fascinating views of the surrounding area. 2 hours are...More

Excellent historic site and exhibitions. Staff wonderful. First world war memorial fascinating. History of second world war sadly being airbrushed from history by the French state.

Quite a lot to see here and a ticket covers two other museums as well. Some dodgy steps to get to the top of some of the towers but would expect this in such an old building.

We paid €5 each to visit La Citadelle and this represents excellent value for money. We spent around 2 hours looking around what remains of the original fortifications but it would certainly be worthy of a longer visit, occupying a whole morning or afternoon (for...More

The citadelle is well worth a visit if only for the views. Some of the steps could be a little treacherous in the wet but worth the climb. The WW1 exhibition in the casemates is also excellent.

Some of the stairs are a bit rickety, and there are some impressive drops from unfenced parapets, so perhaps not for overactive toddlers, but this is a fascinating glimpse into several stages of military architecture with outstanding views from the towers. Really pleasant, helpful and...More
