You cannot miss this small sanctuary. It is smack bang in town. The sustainable of the sanctuary is doubtful as the trees that serves as nesting sites will eventually die. Credos for the people living next door to the sanctuary as the small and noise must be incredible. Great place to view a small colony of Cattle and Small Egrets,... More

For photographers, this heronry is well worth a stop because you're so close to nesting cattle egrets and sacred ibises you can see them feed their chicks. Visit in the morning to have the sun behind you.

Near the Montagu Caravan Park en route to the town of Montagu is this amazing natural Phenomenon of birds nesting and breeding in a town centre. To add to this the Sacred Ibis are quite happy to share the thorn trees with Cattle Egrets. I even spotted a Grey Heron visiting. It is a small dam right on the corner... More

Small football field sized lake with hundreds of birds, mainly Ibis's. Right in the middle of town. It has a small observation platform adjacent to the street.

You can easily see and hear the birds in the trees right along the street. The area was a full of litter and the birds didn't make it any better. Worth it if you like to see South African Ibis.

Just opposite St Mildred's Chapelry is this well constructed hide at the edge of the Leidam - quite useful to novices as pictures and descriptions of the most commonly found birds are displayed. The biggest birds we saw there, the sacred Ibis, seemed unpeturbed by people viewing them, but the other birds were a bit more difficult to spot. I am... More

I did not think much of this sanctuary. The water was stinky and littered. The birds have made quite a mess with their pooping and it smells wretched as we walked by. For the rest of our stay, we avoided walking by the sanctuary. Worth a quick look, but if I lived nearby, I would encourage the birds to go... More

Don't go out of your way to get here but if you do pass by, why not stop and have a look? The majority of the birds on view here are African Sacred Ibis though I did spot a few Cattle Egrets, Cormorants and Weavers. A bird hide was commissioned by the local rotary club, eco club, and various interest... More

Lovely little corner in Montagu. Not a formal bird sanctuary as such and so no entry fee but well worth a stroll to see while you are in Montagu.

Wandering into Montagu, we were curious to discover such a wild collection of birds nesting. The little hut gave some information on the birds.A surprising sight so close to town.
