Easy walk to waterfall with education group entertainment
Apr. 2021 • Family
Nice easy walk from the road. Viewing platform at top of falls and can walk further down track to river edge and over some of rocks to get better view of base of waterfall.
When we went there was a school group with the Hillary Centre that were jumping from the top of the waterfall! Such an awesome (and scary for some) experience for them. I’d like to think it was my words of encouragement “don’t overthink it, just do it, you will feel so proud of yourself once you do it” that helped the last girl her who had been freaking out standing at the top for quite some time take her jump. The instructor/teacher said he thought it was the words of encouragement from a complete stranger that likely helped as he really thought she wasn’t going to do it. 😊

Gollums pool
Mar. 2021
Just off the highway, has a small carpark. Very short walk (20 minutes return) to a lovely 13 m waterfall, used in LOTR films (Gollums pool). Well worth a look and can climb over rocks to get a better view. Water was a really blue. Kids would enjoy.

Easy walk
Jan. 2021
A gentle walk through light bush to a pleasant spot. A nice way to fill in 20-minutes on a day when the weather is changeable and you don't want to stray too far from the car.

Short walk to this little Gem !
Sep. 2020 • Couples
This walk begins about 4km below The Tongariro National Park visitor centre on the road the Whakapapa.
If you face the mountains, it would be on your left hand side and the parking lot is sign posted for the Tawhai Falls.
The walk itself is about 10 minutes one way on a very easy track. The first look out is directly over the falls and the second is at the foot of the falls. It’s a small 13 metre high waterfall, but the rocks and the tree covering make for a beautiful setting.
It is also known as Gollum’s Pool, but since I’m not a LOTR fan, I have no idea about the significance.
Either way, this is a great detour on your way to the ski slopes or the Alpine Crossing or if you have some spare time in the area on account of bad weather further up the road.

Great photo shots
Sep. 2020
Situated in world heritage national park off main road 12 min drive heading towards chateau Tongariro.on left side
This is a short 15 min walk through beech forest but you can be exposed to weather elements so remember good footwear and clothing
This site was used in the Lord of Rings movie featuring waterfalls and large boulders . Great for photo shots.
The walk path is well maintained with steps as you venture down to falls.

Big payoff waterfall with short walk.
Mar. 2020 • Solo
This was a very rewarding short walk. There are some well made steps. There are 2 places to view the lovely waterfall. The guy at the information place said that a scene from Lord of the Rings was shot here. My research shows that it was called Gollum pools. I highly recommend doing this walk.

Short walk to falls
Mar. 2020 • Solo
Just after you turn on the road to whakapapa village, there is a can all car park on your left from where a 15 minute walk will take you down to the falls. Pleasant walk with some steps but the view at the bottom is worth it.
