My Dad and I got lucky. We had a beautiful sunny day with a bit of clouds. Fantastic scenery and views. I've done it two times before and only in rain and definitely not as much fun. Take your time and take pictures and don't just run it. If you walk normal pace and calculate with one hour break than... More

We stayed in a great rented ski hut in Raurimu just a 30 minute drive from the walk entrance. I would suggest pre booking the shuttles unless you have a car to drop around at the exit before beginning. The car at the exit was great as we didnt have to wait around once we completed the walk. The first... More

Went with cousins to celebrate a 40th challenge. Wonderful summers day on 14th January. Even so the wind at certain points was chilling. So take a wind/waterproof jacket, sturdy shoes, sunglasses, sunblock, hat if you are doing it in summer. Take a roll of toilet paper, first aid kit, water (I took 2litres). I wore a merino top. Get some... More

The Tongariro Alpine Crossing is a beautiful walk with fine views on the Tongariro, Red Crater and other mountains. It sometimes challenging and the whole walk is about 8-9 hours. So prepare yourself for that trip. In spring and summer it can be crowded.

Best enjoyable with great weather, which is unfortunately unpredictable. Far more than just the site of Mount Doom from Lord of the Rings. You need a certain level of fitness.

This was an absolutely awesome experience! A good friend and I decided to do it as part of her 40th hang-times we were spending together. It was fantastic! Not as difficult as I'd expected, and we're by no means athletes! We didn't train or prepare at all for it and did just fine. We ensured we had layers to put... More

We were lucky to have perfect December weather for this (warm, but not hot, and no real wind issues, etc), so this affects our score. Please note this is a very tough trek-- 7 to 9 hours-- for those in average shape. Lots of ascent and descent. Bring hiking sticks, real hiking books, a hat, sunglasses, quick dry pants (NO... More

We did the crossing on a beautiful summers day. It took us just over 6 hours with an extra 30 minute detour up to the Tongariro summit. It was fairly hard work on a non-windy day, so I would suggest considering the weather before attempting. Amazing views during the entire walk. We booked with Adventure Lodge, who provided us with... Found it surprisingly more difficult than anticipated. Whether views were worth the effort - subjective. Wife said 'meh', I really enjoyed...but lot of effort for essentially one good looking viewpoint. Started off easy enough, but had to keep climbing (yes saw and read the warnings, still surprised) to the other side till the 3 lakes loomed into view. Felt a... More

I did this trek solo and it was the first time I have taken on a hike that had a max. length of 8 hours. I ended up doing it in 5 hours 45 mins and was about an hour and a half too early for my shuttle to return to the hotel! Before taking on the hike, I did... More
