This 19.4 km walk is an exhilarating experience but not for the faint hearted! We booked a shuttle bus from our campsite in Taupo to the Pukeonake start point, which takes about an hour and a half, so you have to be up early. We started walking at 8 am and with only a short stop at the top, and... More

We were fortunate to have a glorious weather day for our trip over The Crossing from Mangatepopo to Ketetahi having parked at the latter and caught our prebooked shuttle to the start. We were on the track by 06.50 which meant the first 3 to 4 kms were not too busy, but by Soda Springs it was like a freeway.... More

If you hiking and scenic landscape, I highly recommended you to take this hike. It is about 6 hours hike from south to north. The tongariru plateau is beautiful and when you reached the top. You will be awarded blue and emerald lakes Also steam from the earth. Amazing.

An absolutely incredible one day hike showcasing the region. It's not every day you can say that you've hiked up the side of a volcano. It is quite a long hike however, it is worth it in the end. The next few days the body was sore, however, the experience is definitely worth it. You must take more water than... More

My wife and I did this hike with my parents (62 years old) and had a great time. The mistake was that we also did it with our 3 month old infant. My wife and I have done a fair amount of hiking, and really enjoyed the hike overall. There is a lot to say about this hike though. 1.... More

Terrain changes as you move through the 6hr30mins hike. It is a popular hike and we started at 10am and finished by 4.30pm. It is a rewarding and scenic hike and even more beautiful with a clear and sunny sky. Pass 3 lakes and mount doom (Lord if the Rings reference). Note there is only a Toilet at the beginning,... Certainly worthwhile especially on a nice day. Technically not very difficult, although i was not so keen on the first descent from the crater rim. Very few places for a nice stop along the way. Vulcanic landscape with great views. I have walked nicer trails but i guess that is a matter of taste. Suggestions: go early, take it easy... More

An absolute must when travelling in the North Island of NZ. We were lucky because of the fantastic wheather. The landscape is just amazing, and I will not forget the moment when you cross the top and you see the blue, green and turquois volcano lakes. The only negative point was the mass of people doing the treck - avoid... More

On average plan for a 6 to 8 hour hike. The weather can change quickly especially at the summit so either wear layers or take cold weather (rain gear). Hiking boots should be worn even though many hikers wear runners and do ok if it doesn't rain. The trail is heavily used, up to 500 a day during summer and... More
