Fernando de Noronha Holiday

This trip will take you to the state of Pernambuco to see the colorful colonial town of Olinda and the spectacular archipelago of Fernando de Noronha, which is only a short flight away from Recife. This trip is a mix of culture and beach relaxation. Olinda, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, placed on a hill overlooking Recife and the ocean, is one of the best preserved historic places in Brazil. Fernando de Noronha archipelago, which is also a UNESCO Heritage Site and a National Marine Park, on its turn, with its crystal-clear waters and a rich marine life, has a heavenly underwater system and some of the best beaches in the world.

I just returned from this hike. I wish I would have known it was going to be walking for miles on volcanic boulders that are not stable, and move around quite a bit. I twisted my ankle and heard a pop when one of the rocks moved from underneath me. Luckily I was able to catch myself, otherwise I would have fallen down some pretty nasty, sharp boulders. My guide did not offer any empathy, and barely waited while I sat to take a break and roll out my ankle. When I decided not to swim at the very last tide pool, because I was afraid if I took off my hiking shoe I would not be able to get it back on, my guide gave me a lot of grief and told me how I was going to be missing something very beautiful. Not to mention that my guide did not speak any English so I barely understood what she was pointing out along the trail. The views from the trail were so so. I live in California so I see this type of landscape all of the time. I did go into the first two tide pools and they were pretty amazing. Very clear and saw lots of fish, but it felt kind of dangerous the entire time because there were waves crashing over the lava rocks on to where we were swimming. The tide pools are also very shallow so despite wearing a life jacket there were places where my legs brushed up against the coral and I could not help but get scratched. To me, this seems like a tourist scam. You can hardly even called this a trail. It definitely is NOT maintained. I paid $150 US dollars to risk my life. I would strongly recommend that anyone who is considering this excursion just book scuba diving and instead of this excursion. It is much much better and safer (I did scuba twice with Aguas Claras).

We went to the Park office immediately after our plane landed and stood in line for at least an hour waiting to get tickets for this hike. It was miserable! But we are so glad we got the suffering over with and got to do this hike! We chose the long hike and were very happy we did. It immersed us in the raw, wild beauty of the island since the trail goes along the cliffs and beach of the undeveloped side. It was like night and day to compare it to the developed side. I would say it’s an easy hike if you are young and healthy, and a challenging one if you can’t always depend on your knees and ankles. There is a long bit of hiking on large rocks (that move)....But if you think you can do it, you certainly can! It was definitely longer and more challenging than I expected. We had 7:30 am tickets and finished @1:15 pm, with most of the time hiking and 1 1/2 - 2 hrs in and out of tide pools. Wear good walking shoes and take water shoes for getting in and out of the tide pools. The last one in particular is painful in bare feet. So, the tide pools: definitely a treat! We saw lots and lots of fish, especially at Atalaia when the tide was low, but also at the other tide pools. We also saw a big beautiful turtle, a Moray eel, and an octopus who did not deign to come out of his hiding place. And, of course, lots of beautiful fish.

There are two options to visit the Atalaia natural pool: a short walk to the Atalaia beach that can be made without a guide (but you still need to reserve in advance) and a long one that after Atalaia leads you to two other natural pools through a wonderful landscape of cliffs. Snorkeling in the pools (they are aquariums) is an unforgettable experience. Do not miss it.
