Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

My hubby & I did thru Infotur with a very sweet & attractive Cuban lady with a Japanese name (Yoshida?).
Infotur picked us up from our casa particular, the driver Daniel careful around potholes & very nice. The cave guide Michael very knowledgeable, helpful & funny. We had a private tour as sadly there are fewer takers of late.
The steep hike up to the cave opening was daunting & the ladder inside required bravery on my part too. We loved the experience & view & would certainly recommend if you have good shoes, are not fearful of heights, like a reasonable challenge. We are in our 50s.

We went to this experience only knowing that we would be visiting a cave. Unfortunately we were not adequately prepared for the demands of the climb up to the cave and back from the cave and the terrain in the cave. This is a very strenuous experience which calls for good hiking shoes and a body in good condition. We all are in ours late 60's/70's and now have a great story to tell but the recovery physically was impressive. Just know what you are getting into. They also give you a helmet with a headlight which you absolutely need as the cave is dark in many places and there are many spots to bump your head.

20 km west of Viñales, in El Moncada, is the Gran Caverna de Santo Tomás , considered the largest cave system in Cuba and the second largest in the Americas. The cave does not cease to amaze, not only because of its over 46 km length, but also because of all the beauty within- of course for visitors it is much less km. Just take good shoes as you need to first climb about 20 minutes.

Wow, this is a must visit Cave if you're in Vinales! This Cave consists of seven levels, however only two are accessible to tourist. We had Micheal as our tour guide and he was explaining very little detail to us from the heart. Thank you for having us!

I really enjoyed the challenge of hiking up to the Cave and for a km. inside the cave. I can't say enough about our wonderful guide, Michael, who helped me as an older person every step of the way. I have never experienced such care and concern from a guide; the cave is varied, unique, and special for the traveler. You have to wear a helmet with a light on its front to light your way. If you are able to hike, I would recommend this trip. I would not recommend it if you are walking or climbing challenged.

As with a number of things to see in Vinales this was well worth visiting. Might be a little overwhelming if you are claustrophobic and quite a few steep steps but the rock formations were way more impressive than we expected. Not a very long tour but well worth the effort to take it.

It is a bit of a climb to this beautiful cave but well worth it. Enormous caverns, bats and beautiful formations. The guides were very knowledgeable. I will be back.

Gran Caverna de Santo Tomas is the second largest cave system on the American continent. Sadly there is only 1 km accesible to the public but the cave is impressive. It involves a short walk through stalacites and stalagmites and a short boat cruise on the water in the cave.

It's a cave, you can have nice views from there, nice visit but for the price (we paid 15 CUC each), doesn't really worth it...

A 15 minute detour off our Vinales Valley tour, these caves are interesting but not a must see. Nothing extraordinary

we went on the guided tour and asked the guide about exploring more of the cave system and he found someone to take us in a different entrance. You do need your own headtorch as the ones they provide don't last long or take 4 AA batteries. You need good footwear.
I have a 4 year old and a baby. We would wear the baby in a carrier and maybe even the 4 year old on our back. Do kids do this hike?

Do I need to make reservations for the guided tour if Cuevas de Sanro Tomas? Or just arrive and pay? Any information is helpful. Planning on visiting Saturday January 28, 2017.

Good morning from Viñales:
I explain that it is not necessary to make a reservation to visit the Cave Saint Tomás, but needs a taxi to arrive since from Viñales it is to 17 km, but he will find easy to get the taxi in the town center.

No it would be quite difficult. There is a 15 minute steep uphill hike to the cave entrance. Then inside the cave its helmets and dim head lights only. There is also some climbing inside. To be honest most caves in Cuba are under developed and not safe by western standards. Another one I did in Vinales i slipped a few times as well, while the drop off the edge was not huge it was a fair way down a slope and not sure its something you really want to worry about!
