We only had a short stop here as part of our cruise ship tour. I short walk from the main square with great views. Charming inside and out.

Ribeira Grande lends itself to very pleasant city walks. The church is one of main attractions and stops during such a walk. It is located on a hill with the monument of Dr Gaspar Fructuosa in front of it. He was a Portuguese priest and historian. There are quite a few steps leading up to the church but the climb is worth your while. The church consecrated in 1517 and called Igreja Matriz de Nossa Senhora da Estrela is truly beautiful. It has a white fasade and massive basalt bell tower. During our visit there were still some decorations from a fiesta. Inside the church is even more impressive with altars, chapels, carvings. There is a lovely view from the top of the stairs leading to the church.…

Lovely town on the other side of the island. Church has a nice view of the town from the top steps. the island is the best keep secret in the Atlantic Ocean.

I was not able to get inside, and there were no hours posted, so not sure when they are open. From the outside the building is amazing, the architecture is beautiful. I would like to come back and see the inside.
