We called in as we were driving past, so we haven't completed the hikes around the area. However, others have reviewed these.
I drove past the first parking area, and boy am I glad I did as between this an the waterfall is a very steep and narrow road that I certainly would not enjoy walking up.
The waterfall is a free attraction so can be very busy and always a few people swimming in the pond at the bottom. Have been provided here, so things can get a little chaotic.
There is also a nice stretch of river to sit for a while and ponder life.
It's worth a visit if you are in the area, however, you haven't missed a major event if you don't make it

Honestly the waterfall is beautiful, but it was overrun with other tourists while we were there. There were many other peaceful spots on the island that were just as beautiful that you could actually enjoy, rather than bus loads of ppl being dropped off. Part of being a tourist, but glad I didn’t put this at the top of my bucket list for the trip, it was an add on to other items.

We spent in total 60 minutes here and is easily accessed by car. When traveling from Punta Delgado take EN5-2A stopping at Lagoa do Fago and enjoy the view stopping at the various picture points. Then continue on north towards Ribeira Grande and consider stopping at Caldeiras Velha and enjoy the thermal baths if it is not crowed. If it is crowed or afterwards continue on the road for 3KM or 6 minute drive to a dirt road poorly marked on the right hand side. After 3 km or 6 minute drive you will come to the 1st right or what appears to be a large wide driveway past Caldeira Velha.
Take this dirt road to what appears to be a vacant modern white house and park there and walk down a steep and winding paved path/narrow road. However, If you have a senior or someone that has difficulty walking, you can literally drive down the narrow steep road and pull up within 40 yards of the falls.
Once at the bottom, keep walking past the path opening on the left as this will lead you nowhere. After walking straight 100 yards towards the parking sign you will see a building structure and see the falls. Traverse the area carefully as the falls are best approached via the other side of the creek / river.
The water at these falls are very enjoyable to swim in and are much warmer than the falls at Salto do Prego. Once done enjoying the falls, find the path behind the former electric building. This path leads to steps acsending high into the canopy and then along the water lines from this former hydro electric plant. This is a 10 minute hike / walk that gives you the best view from above the falls.
If you want to make a 2 - 3 hour experience, then do the circular hike:
Begin this walk at Ribeira Grande hot springs, going down the asphalted road and turn left heading Lombadas/Monte Escuro until you find a pipeline. Continue left on the asphalted road and turn right, transpose a wall and follow along the way to
gain access to the Fajã do Redondo Dam (photo 2). Take the same road back until the same pipeline and follow it until you find a detour on your left side, near a gate.
When you arrive to the Hydroelectric Power Plant of Fajã do Redondo (photo 3), climb the stairs that give access to a metallic sidewalk and continue until you reach the Hydroelectric Power Plant of Salto do Cabrito.
Go round the building so you can see the waterfall (photo 4)
that gives name to this power plant. Before climbing you will go through a detour on your right, near a stream, ending in sparkling water spring. Return to the main road and go up until you reach the asphalted road, turning right. Follow the marks and turn right to a dirt road. Here you have to overcome two streams, the second one with bigger flow, being advisable to cross it barefooted. Ahead you will find a fork, go right, cutting the your first on your left side until you see a paved road where you should turn right again, back to the Caldeiras of Ribeira Grande

The walk along the pipe in the valley was a real surprise. A lot of stairs down (from Caldeiros end) so we didn't complete it.

We visited here after going to Lagoa do Fogo. We didn't do the long hike, instead we drove past Caldeira Velha, and turned off the road at the sign for Salto do Cabrito. We parked at the lot near the white building. There’s a road that continues down, but it’s incredibly steep. Most cars parked where we did.
The walk down is on a road. As mentioned it is steep but not terribly long. Continue walking straight at the end of the road to the second parking lot. You’ll hear the waterfall and it’s a short walk from there. This is a large, beautiful waterfall.
There’s a much longer, more scenic hike to the waterfalls that leaves from a different area, but we decided to take this short cut.
There's also a dam to see here and a short walk to see a scenic part of the river.
In the summer i imagine this would be a great place to cool off!!

I went with my dad and we get really close by car but is also possible to walk. Perfect for doing it before going to Caldera Velha and Lagoa do Fogo because is is the same road. We quite like the place is so nice to see and take some photos. Nothing from the other world but worth a visit;)

We took the Salto do Cabrito walk--don't remember the length but we took about 2 1/2 hours. At first the walk is not very impressive, but once you get to the old power plant and follow the gorge it is well worth the effort. We took the walk after a few days of rain and had to ford a couple of streams--taking off shoes and socks for the second, but no big deal. Stop at the restaurant at the end of the circular walk for a meal (great cozido prices) or beer.

We walked from Caldeiras de Ribeira Grande to this spot along the hiking trail, and it's ingenious in the way it uses a giant pipe (which services the hydro electric dam next to the waterfall) as part of the route. The heights on this route by the waterfall are something else!
I'd also recommend visiting the abandoned dam at the Caldeiras de Ribeira Grande end of this route, which we almost didn't do but was absolutely worth the 10-15 minute detour.

Fantastic hike although we saw more people on the hike to this waterfall than just about any other hike. It’s beautiful and very popular.

First off, unless you find it tough to walk then instead of following the sign posts to the waterfall, I would recommend parking in Caldeiras (Caldeiras da, Ribeira Grande, Portugal), and walking up and over the hill. You walk up the hill towards Barragem Dam and then turn right and basically follow a pipe all the way down. The footpath is well signposted (yellow and red paint) and the walk is interesting.
Along the route you will see some old buildings before you walk along the water pipe to the top of the waterfall. There are some high sections so it's not for those scared of heights! You can then descend some really steep steps down to the power station (which does hum, but honestly isn't that loud and you'll forget it's there) from where you can access the base of the falls.
We went at the end of October and there were about 10 people there, but I can imagine it's really busy in peak season, so take that into consideration.

Can anyone tell me where the exact starting point is for the trail? I went to the Azores website and there is a trail PRC 29 - but I am having a difficult time on google maps to determine the actual route. We are planning to do in July.
Thanks!

Hi Nitin, we were really lazy about it - haha, and followed the sign for Salto do Cabrito, there is a signposted left turn off the road and shortly after you will probably see half a dozen or so cars parked. But you will notice there is a road continues down the hill from where the cars are parked. You can take the road down almost to the waterfall itself. It is steep and winding but easily drivable if you go slowly. At the bottom is another car park and from there it is only a few metres to the waterfall itself. As I say, we felt really lazy driving, but looking at the hard work some folks were having walking back up the winding steep road, we were quite glad we did!!!

Hi Hallette....there are better and nicer plaçe to visit in São Miguel than Salto do Cabrito. If you're looking for a hike and a much fuller waterfall then head on to Sanginho (Salto do Prego).
However, if you have not been to São Miguel before, you must go to Sete Cidades and Lagoa do Canário. Enjoy!

Hola Pedro
I would like to know how to drive there by car as my mother cannot walk very well. Do I have to turn on EN5-2A and take those bends or shall I take unnamed road from ER3-1 to the right? From Googlemaps it is not obvious where the walking path is.
Thank you so much for your advice

You can drive all the way down. Just follow the signs for it and keep going. We parked at the top and walked and then realized we could have driven down. Its worth the trip. We loved swimming under the waterfall. And the hike up to and behind the water fall is worth doing.. your mother would not do well with that however. Its quite intense and beautiful.

Hi Meghan:
We are thinking of going to the Azores in October and wonder how your experience at this time of year was. Weather, attractions open/closed? We'd like to do water activities such as whaling and fishing. Is it available?
Written 28 May 2017
Hi. The weather in the Azores is alittle unpredictable at a long term, but usually we have good weather, nice temperature, but bring some warm clothes, just in case...
About activities there are several companies specialized on activities like fishing and whale/dolphin watching or even hikes and canyoning... just try to google "Azores fishing" or "Azores whale watching" and you'll have access to a lot of information, most of it in English.
I hope this was helpful! ;-)

Hello,
Can visitors drive to the Salto do Cabrito waterfall? I just stumbled upon a review where the reviewer said he drove there. I will be visiting in March but traveling with 2 very young kids. Hiking to the waterfall isn't an option but I'm pretty excited to know that we might be able to drive to it!
Written 26 January 2017
Hi there. First of all, and as an Azorian, let me congratulate you on your great choice on coming to the Azores! :-D
About your question, yes. As the other persons here said, it is possible to drive right to the waterfall. However it is advised to drive VERY slowly because the path is a little bit narrow and a bit steep, but perfectly doable. If you have other issues or questions about "my" island, feel free to contact me.
No strings attached or second intentions. :-)
