Very interesting new museum that shows the carpets industry in Arraiolos. A very nice and modern museum with English explanation on each display.

Fascinating history of the area's tapestries
Oct. 2021
We were pleasantly surprised with this small museum about Arraiolos carpets and tapestries. It's really modern and well designed and has lots of different examples of the historic carpets. There was even a local woman working on a rug in the traditional method. It's definitely worth a stop if you are in the area.

Worthwhile Stop
Nov. 2021 • Couples
Worth a stop with a very small entry fee if you’re in the area. The tapestries are amazing and there was an actual crafts person there working on a rug.

A great modern exhibition and museum about Arraiolos tapestry, Everything you wanted to know is there.
Jul. 2021
If you are interested in Arraiolos tapestry, this museum is a must for you. One of those small, amazing modern top class Portuguese museums. You do not expect much and you discover a super educational, well explained and laid our museum. On top of a very clear and interesting explanation, there is an amazing exhibition of Arraiolos tapestries - some are a few hundred years old. And a real bargain. Not to be missed.

Informative

It was the first day of the town festival when we visited. On our walk-about, we spotted this neat museum. It was only 50 cents to enter, what a bargain.

However, I wasn’t allowed to take pictures while I was inside. Anyway, I thought that the museum had such great information about the manual carpet-making process, which involved embroidery on a huge scale. There was even a short film about it. Everything was well laid out, with carpet samples hung in certain spots.

Today, there are only a handful of people left in the area who are keeping this tradition going. What a laborious way of making carpets.

A bargain
Aug. 2019 • Friends
This is a very interesting little museum. It was quite hard to find and after driving around the very narrow streets for quite a long time we parked in an area labelled parque3 and walked. But it did mean we got to see a roundabout with scissors and a ball of wool with the castle remains behind. But back to the museum, just 1 Euro entrance per person, explanations on weaving and a lady actually doing a rug. Very good. There are some shops in the little town where you can buy them, but it the rugs are expensive and some handicraft shops. Good town to visit.

Don't overlook this

Such an interesting small museum which covers the history of Arraiolos and the wool rug making from its earliest times. A young man demonstrated how the wool was embroidered into the backing. This museum also covered local jewellery making and designs. Beautifully laid out and well worth the 50 cents entry fee. The marble bathrooms certainly worth a visit!

A tribute to the town's carpet making heritage
Sep. 2018 • Couples
This small, but beautifully presented museum showcases the ancient carpet making heritage of the small town of Arraiolos. A dedicated local lady was on hand expertly stitching a carpet in tapestry form, and despite our not being able to speak each other's language, she was able to explain by demonstration how the stitching is done. The carpet was beautiful, as were all the other carpets displayed on the walls of the museum. There were many items displayed which were interesting to see and read about, but as you leave, don't forget to slip into the tiny little chapel opposite reception, where the floor is glassed over, covering archaeology discovered from the past. For a very modest €2 entrance fee, you can spend a quiet hour just browsing the exhibits. I loved it here.

Excellent specialist museum.
Oct. 2018 • Couples
This is a fabulous small museum specialising in the carpets of Arraiolos. The carpets are a traditional product of the area and it dates back to Moorish origins. The carpets are hand made and we saw a lady making one and we could also try our hand at it. A Must See if you go to Arraiolos.
