A place that is a journey through history. A church and a cloister where architecture, light and art capture attention, staring a visual and spatial experience that will be memorable and impressive. From a convent to a prison, from the fifteenth to the early nineteenth century, from earthquakes to the restoration, a wonderful gem arrives until our days to affirm the value of our cultural heritage.

This was an unexpected treat. We were advised by a helpful local that the church was open on the day of our visit, and we were very lucky to see it. This building has been lost as a church for ober 100 years, and was until recently a prison. It has been beutifully restored and only recently opened to the... More

This apparently has been a prison sonic the reunification of Italy until 2 years ago. It opened a month ago so we were very lucky to be able to visit. (Closed at 1330) We had a very helpful and informative young lady show us around and tell about the buildings.

We had read about the Catalan Gothic fascade of this church, believing that that was all there was to see of this ruined church. However we felt that it deserved to be on our must see list. As we were walking around Modica Alta we saw posters advertising the cloisters with opening times, everyday apart from Monday and siesta time.... More

We were lucky to see this beautiful building with lots of stories for the visitors. It only opened 3 weeks ago. It was a church and after (until 2011) was a jail. You will have a guide that will help you to understand what has happened in that placed in the last centuries. Entry cost 3€ per person. Go!

This church and monastery is located within the grounds of the Modica correctional facility and is only open on Saturday mornings between 10 and noon. We went as part of an organised tour, but sole travellers are equally welcome, as no reservation appears to be necessary.
