Do not miss this place. It is one of the largest and certainly the most beautiful underground church that I know of. A good way to get a sense of it is to go to a concert in the church. The acoustics are remarkable.

One of the largest "cave churches" in Europe. It is hewn from the rock and rises to great height with balconies overlooking the central area. There are a lot of interesting features and the audio tour is good. My granddaughters of 6 and 8 were...More

This certainly is a must to visit if you are anywhere near Aubeterre in the Dordogne. If you look above at the cliffs that surround the church you will then see how tall the church is. However when you enter the church you will be...More

Personally thought that this wasn't worth the journey. The "2nd most beautiful town in France?" Was very small very expensive and I have seen many towns/villages in France that don't bear this label but are more interesting and not marred by shops with the singular...More

We attended to hear the parabolic orchestra in this amazing subterranean church. The sights and sounds were incredible, and the event was packed.

This is the main attraction of Auberterre. I have never seen anything like it before. A church hewn out of the rocks. Well worth a visit.

This is a church that has been carved out of rock, creating a huge caved hall. You can also climb stairs to view the massive hollow monolith from the carved gangways about 30-40 meters up. Very cool and well worth the visit.

I found the transition from brilliant sunshine to cool darkness is quite eerie and unsettling upon first entering, especially as we were lucky enough to have the place to ourselves. The photos just don't communicate the vastness of the main space, hewn from sheer rock....More

Unique and wonderful experience. Use the audioguide to follow along. The village itself is also worth a visit. You can plan a leisurely lunch in the town plaza, or bring your lunch at the recreation area by the river. Fun for adults and kids alike.

Fantastic underground church a nice place to visit and it is cool in the summer heat. Although the church was not in use for very long, it is an impressive site, halfway between caves and a sacred place. If you have been to Jerusalem you...More
