Roy’s is stellar at both sunrise and sunset. I’m not sure if there’s a big enough edge of sunrise over sunset for me to feel motivated to wake up at 2am to start hiking considering that the sunrise and sunset both illuminate the mountain from...More

Did the hike on 21 Dec 2018. Have been looking forward to doing this hike since planning for my NZ holiday in May. Checked the weather forecast the day before and it was supposed to be cloudy and rainy in the afternoon. But the next...More

This walk is ridiculously tough. It’s 95% uphill with very little flat parts. I almost gave up at least 5 times but thankfully made it to the top. The views are magnificent and they without a doubt worth it. I read reviews that the view...More

Difficult to find parking, crowded trail, over 1 hour wait to get a photo at the top. Crazy! Venture down the road a bit to Diamond Lake. No crowds, easy parking, stunning views.

This is a very challenging hike (and I’m in good physical shape), mostly uphill the entire time...but it is SO worth it. Bring about a liter of water and definitely some snacks to keep you going. Also bring a fleece or something because it’s chilly...More

The views of Lake Wanaka, the city of Wanaka and even Lake Hawea are awesome. The never ending trudge upward defeats many of the unprepared, but if you make it high enough, you are rewarded by views of the other side of the peak, (Mountains,...More

This was the most challenging day hike we did in New Zealand. There is no shade on the trail so be prepared for 5-6 hours of direct sunlight. You traverse up the side of the mountain go reach the summit. Although some find that boring,...More

We were warned that the hike wasn't for the unfit and we saw why. The track is a 6hr return so be prepared with water and food. Also I'd recommend doing it near Dawn or dusk when the day is a bit colder. DO NOT...More

If you have the energy this is well worth the sweaty 2 hour grunt up to the peak - take lots of water and don't leave any rubbish behind!

Roy’s Peak is about 5hrs for a fit person - 3 up, 2 down. And whatever time you spend at the top. The start of Roy’s Peak is about 5km from the Wanaka Tree & town. If you have a car/taxi it’s doable. If you have to... More
