Meet the Vikings!

At Borg in Lofoten, the largest longhouse in the world of the Vikings has been found - and reconstructed. Upon entering the 83 meter longhouse, you embark on a journey more than an 1000 years back in time.

The richly decorated Gildehallen (feasting hall), the craftswork in the living quarters, the architecture of the grand building, the exhibitions on the beliefs of the Vikings - it all gives you an insight into the Viking life.

The longhouse was the seat of a rich and powerful Viking Chieftain and the Lady of the house. Archaeological findings from the site are sensational and tells an exciting history about power, trade and daily life of the Vikings.

In addition to the Viking Chieftain's house, the museum offers modern exhibition halls with archaeological artifacts, and the story of the finding and excavation of Borg. In the film theatre, we show a short drama-film. During summer, the Viking ship is moored at the seaside, 20 min walk from the Chieftain's house. June 15 - August 31 guests may participate in Viking activities, such as rowing the Viking ship and trying their hand at archery. All year, different Viking meals are being served, check web for more info.

The museum is open all year, during winter limited hours/a few days pr week, + every evening for the Viking feasts.

The exhibition hall is fantastic with online audio guide - very informative. The viking long house displays the viking lifestyle. It's good to know the setting - three sections (the chief's house, the dining hall and the storage room). The walk to the boat house is extremely pleasant too with beautiful scenery of the fjords, the sea and the farm.

The reconstruced Viking house is a must-see while visiting Lofoten, as well as the museum's essential explanations necessary to understand the site itself and the life of the Vikings, quite different from abused commonplace. Avoid the shop and enjoy the surroundings

Thank you for appreciating our museum and sharing your experience with us. We have chosen to focus on Vikings everyday life in Lofoten, opposed to the more common conception on Vikings as warriors. Thanks again! More

Great museum introducing the viking culture of the place. Contains reconstructed viking house and a short movie explaining the story of the family who lived here. In the summer lot of activities for tourists as a part of exposition. Also possible to come here for authentic Viking dinner (haven't tried though).

We were on a Hurtigruten cruise and an evening trip was available - at a price! We were taken back in time to visit the Vikings with a history lesson, food, which was a very good lamb meal and mead, singing and a dance round the fire. It was a good evening which didn't, due to sailing times last long... More

The museum is small but really really nice! It's a little expensive but that's Norway... I loved the chiefs house, where ypu can go and explore everything and take pictures

Everyone who worked there was very nice and friendly. But the things on display are largely recreations, not artifacts. You need half an hour at most. The gift shop is worthwhile!

Thanks for your feedback. We are happy to hear that you enjoyed the museum gift shop. You are right - the artifacts in the archeological artifacts-display are not too many but some of them quite unique. Elsewhere in the museum it is replicas, for us to use them, show daily life of the Vikings and let visitors who wish so,... More

I was expecting more. The Vikings were so much a part of their culture that I was expecting a better hostyorical picture . They just didn't deliver. On the other hand, the Lofotan Island are a beauty and worth th trip.

Thanks for your review. We are sorry to hear that we did not fulfill your expectations. At Lofotr, we do focus on what took place here and try to relate it to the world. The museum does not give an overall impression of the Viking age in the world but we rather try to go more local, so to say.... More
