Well-preserved fortifications to walk around and explore, especially the Porte de Gênes (where you can see where they operated the drawbridge). You can get some great views from the battlements too, of the port, Sardinia, and the sea in general.
Within the citadel, the old buildings, cobbled streets, the chapels, shops and restaurants kept me occupied for hours. I particularly loved looking at the old door lintels and the religious icons in little wall alcoves.
I took an early morning walk along the Sentier de Campu Rumanilu – well worth doing, especially at that time of day. The colours of the cliffs and the citadel fortifications reflecting the sunrise - just beautiful.

On of the most touristic places of Corsica and I understand why. The location on the most south part of the island is quite unique. High on the beautiful cliffs is the old part (citadel) of the town located. At the lower part there is the beautiful marina with large yachts and the boulevard.
Both on the boulevard as in the citadel there are a lot of restaurants. At the boulevard you can watch the beautiful ships and in the citadel you can stroll through the steep alleys and enjoy the old buildings. Along the citadel wall you have a beautiful view on the sea and the cliffs.
It is a pity the cars allowed in parts of the citadel and a part of the citadel consists of parking lots. That is different to citadel (old towns) at other cities.

While the Bonifacio Citadel is really a photo op, perched on beautiful cliffs with extraordinary views, it is virtually a ghost town in late fall, Winter and spring. Simply no food other than at the Xmas Market, in a very crowded small area, no groceries store, and lnly a few stores open. It simply contents itself with catering to late spring- early fall tourism. It should look to Porto Veccio as an example of reduced but alive during the off season.

You need to leave your car on the paying parkings down by the small harbor and climb the steps to reach the beautiful citadel with a magnificent scenery and very typical village of Bonifacio, which is even nicer than Calvi. It takes a good 2 hours to go all around a d walk in the narrow streets of the village, which free of cars. You find nice boutiques and restaurants.

We visited Bonifacio on a one day tour from Sardines. The city is well worth a visit, it offer many small streets and alleys. Lots of small and cozy restaurants and bars. Except steep roads and lots of stairs.

Possibly Bonifacio is one of the prettiest city I have ever seen. So characteristic, build on the cliffs. It's a pleasure to get lost inside the old town and explore every corner. But also to walk outside Bonifacio, on it's left side, following a path on the cliffs.

The Citadel is a great spot in Bonifacio. It's a fortress with a village in walls, with a great seaview and all the facilities you can need, especially for bars and restaurants.
This is the right place where you can spend at least 1 night while in Bonifacio.

From Hotel Solemare it is a short but challenging walk to the medieval citadel. Challenging because of the steep climb to its entrance. Those who have any impairment preventing them from walking or honest enough to admit that they are carrying more than a few excess pounds should consider the mini train - yes the train is very Disney but it beats a defibrillator followed by cardiac massage.
Once you get to the top it is hard to be disappointed. The citadel is beautiful even though it is crumbling in places. There are enough shops and restaurants to entertain most visitors. Churches and a cemetery make up other attractions. I did say cemetery it is a sight to behold and very photogenic.

Taking the way up the hill might be challenging but the excitement to reach the top and the many beautiful small streets with restaurants, shops are worth the efforts.
You can check some souvenirs around the port.
Must taste the french bread served
And going back is less tricky.
Take the ferry between Sardinia and Bonifacio

Aux abords du port, pas loin des embarcadère pour les vedettes à destination des Îles Lavezzi.
Bonne promenade.

parts of the city would be but not all and getting up there would be difficult unless they let you drive up with your special sticker.

We're a group of 7 and we're staying in Porto Vecchio for 3 nights.what is the best way to come to Bonifacio to spend a day? Car, bus or boat? And how long does it take?
Also what is the latest time to leave from Bonifacio and return to Porto Vecchio ? Thanks
Written 16 May 2017
Not sure if I'm too late, we've just returned from Bonifacio, we were there for 5 days and loved it. We drove to Porto Vecchio, it took approx 50 minutes. It's an easy drive and the roads are good. You can park in one of the car parks near the marina and then walk thru the Marina and up to the citadel. It's an uphill walk, takes about 20 minutes, but worth it.
Hope you enjoy.

I've read a few posts where it is recommended to use a guide to see and hear about the citadel. Can anyone share who they used and how to contact someone. I also read that you can get a guide at the tourism office...is it as simple as walking in the day our ship arrives? I normally like to email ahead of time and get things liked this booked but if that's how it's done here, that's good to know. Arriving in May for a port call on Seabourn. I'd really enjoy a fantastic meal up there overlooking the ocean if someone can recommend a spot. Thanks all.

You book guides at the tourist office. I don't know how to book in advance. There are several good restaurants (near Aragon's stairway) with views over the sea, but not as many as you would expect. Most restaurants are along side the harbor and also nice view if you like beautiful boats. You'll love Bonifacio. If there is any way visit Isola Levera. It is off-scale beautiful and the boat ride is spectacular.

Hello! I'm coming to Corsica on 19 September for two days. I'm travelling from Italy Savona. How can I get to Corsica best?
Written 27 August 2016
Good morning, the best ways you get to Corsica are:
- ferries from Savona or Genoa(30 mins from Savona)or Livorno(2h/2h30 from Savona) to Bastia or Calvi, It depends where u have to go.
You can find prices looking Corsica Ferries's site or Moby's site
Have a good day.

Hi. We will be staying in Porticcio at the end of June. What is the best way to get to Bonifacio......car, boat or train from Porticcio and how long should we allow for a round trip tour in 1 day. Thanks
