Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

About an hour and ten minutes south of Coban by chicken bus. Definitely worth a stop if your passing through, but if you have any desire to see the quetzal, i suggest you stay next door at los Ranchitos (listed in LP as parque ecologico Gucamatz) they also have some hiking trails, though not quite as manicured as in the biotope.
The morning we were leaving the young daughter (of the owners) came knocking in our door. She had a big smile on here face and i thought she was saying "que pasa". When she started to flap her arms, it became very clear (in my foggy morning stupor) that the quetzal was hanging out near the restaurant. Managed to get a few awesome pics, before jumping on a chicken bus and continuing in our way.

Wow! I have no words to say about our experience hiking this place. It was really nice hike the majestic mountain where lots of "Quetzales" (Guatemalan National Bird) stays and reproduce. The place is really quiet, safe, and it is like hiking at the jungle, since it is a tropical forest. The prices to hike there are really inexpensive, also there is security all times.

Take note, the place is not actually in Coban!!! But is very worth to visit. If you like hiking trails and the rainy forest, and enjoy the sounds of nature, this is the place to visit. Cold and humid weather, but nothing a jacket can't solve. The place opens from 7:00 to 16:00 hours. Several hotels near. You can camp in the biotope also.

We visited this park from Coban. From there we took a bus from the terminal of Transportes Monja Blanca. For Q10, - per person they wil drop you off near the entrance of the park. The ride will take up to 1:15 h. The park itself is well maintained, the trails are kept in good condition.
Spotting wildlife is always hard but we managed to see some lizards, birds, and a (big) snake. At the end of the trail, some nice natural pools will give you some refreshment!
To go back to Coban, at the road, wave down any bus heading towards the city (collectivo / chicken bus).

Our visit to this park, en route towards Coban, just resulted in a 2-hours walk inside this small preserved part of the Guatemala forest. This would definitely be an excellent experience with a guide who knows the flora & fauna of this place. We hadn’t that chance.

Although we didn’t see the famous quetzal we had a great time walking through this rain forest. There are 2 paths one of 2 km (1.5 hour) and a 4 km (2.5 hours). The paths are well maintained. We didn’t see any bird, we heard some but we arrive around 11:30 which to my opinion too late for real birds watching.

The area to which the visitors are allowed is really quite limited. Maybe for a good reason:) but like this it is really difficult to spot quetzales... actually any birds at all.. I wasnt very lucky with the weather and maybe this kind of influenced my overall rating. And maybe the fact that foreigners are charged 4 times more (40quetzales) than the visitors from the Central American countries (10 quetzales). And it would have costed me double to camp there (20) than my friend (10)... but the trails are well kept, the walk is nice.and you get to get to a waterfall. Quite an easy walk on very well marked.trail. no challenge for serious hikers🙄 if you are in that area, you might consider walking to Salto de Chilasco, the highest waterfall in centralamerica.

We were very excited about the visit to the Biotopo and hoped to spot a Quetzal. But spotting Quetzals are as rare as winning a lottery! This is something that we learnt after going there.
We chose to walk the shorter loop of 2 miles. It is a nice hike through the preserved forest area, many ferns dominate the landscape, some are so huge that they could be mistaken for a tree. But besides a nature hike there isn't anything which is exceptional about this Biosphere. If you have an avid interest in nature walks and plants then it is a good way to enjoy the local flora.
If one is short on time then this destination can be skipped.

We loved this park, the cloud forest was dream like and even though we didn't see a quetzal bird it was well worth the trip. From Coban you can take a bus or minivan to the biotopo (1 hr journey from 2nd calle, 15Q). We left at 6am and arrived at the park for open at 7. The birds where most alive at this time. We walked the 4km track which has a mirador and a small waterfall. There is also a 2km track if you dont feel like walking much. We were back in Coban by midday. Nice half day trip.

While this is hardly the place for hard core hikers to get their fix, there are two loops you can walk in the park. One is 2 km long and the other 4 km. We didn't see any of the famed quetzales that day, but it is a beautiful place to stop and visit. There is a swimming hole and changing rooms. They have a small museum that talks about the quetzal and the park itself. Well worth the visit.
