Old Faithful was way too crowded. We spent time on this road and saw as many natural wonders as we needed. Several points to stop at and see numerous geysers and mud pots

This is a one way drive that takes you to some great geyser. We had the good fortune of seeing the cone geyser (White Dome I think.) go off. Excellent drive a little off the main road.

This short little drive would be easy to miss, but it was one of our favorite features of the park. We almost drove right past it, but decided to take the loop and we were so glad we did. We saw four different geyser erupting in this area and the Firehole lake at the end was really impressive. Don't drive by this scenic loop ... you'll love all the beautiful and unique features in this area.

This is very easy to do as you drive along 191 from Old Faithful/Grand Prismatic to Madison Junction. It goes in one direction. Along the way, you just park at whatever spot peaks your interest. Then, just walk a few steps to see the highlights. We made several stops and spent 35 minutes here.
Not a must do of Yellowstone but if you have some extra time, it's worth a quick detour.

Many interesting sights here & lots of geothermal activity. Take you time to really see the activity. Timing is everything at Yellowstone, so check for possible eruption times so you can plan your day.

The first time past this drive, we went through the 1.2 mile loop. Here the geysers are more water spewing in the air. After visiting old Faithful, we passed back past and a HUGE heard of Bison was walking across the road. Feet, and sometimes inches, away from one's vehicle. Talk about up close and personal. Wow! Great up close photos of adolescent and adult bison.

Firehole Lake Drive is located off the Grand Loop Road, about halfway between Old Faithful and Madison Junction. This is a curvy 3.3 mile one-way loop of paved roadway which is closed to larger vehicular traffic. The latter trait makes this beautiful drive especially rewarding for travelers who have maxed out on navigating around the huge tour buses (and nervous RV-renters) found all over YNP. The road drives right up to several geysers, including the unusual 12 foot high cone-shaped White Dome and the Pink Cone geyser. There are also other geothermal features such as colorful pools and lakes along this tree-lined road. Whether you LOVE this drive will depend a lot on your timing. For us this was an amazing experience because we got to see several eruptions, including the extended post-eruption display of the Great Fountain geyser. It seems this magnificent geyser frequently continues to spew for over an hour after its initial eruption. The visual display is enhanced by the internal rumbling that intensifies til this giant releases its spray. The Great Fountain is included in the daily YNP "eruption prediction schedule" so you can try to time your drive accordingly. We decided this is our favorite geyser in the park (and in 4 days we saw almost ALL of them). One night during a full moon we drove back to the Great Fountain and got some amazing photos of the geyser's spray glowing in the moonlight-- truly an awesome experience (complete with coyotes crying in the background). Big sigh! Whether waiting for geysers or watching out for wolves, the key to YNP is releasing yourself to the rhythm of this place, where primordial forces set their own rules and time schedules! Allow yourself time to wait and contemplate, and the Firehole area will give you some wonderful off-the-grid memories.

This is a small road with a detour on the way that can be done but not required. There are all sorts of nice stops and small geysers.
The nice thing is that you can come with the vehicle to each of the attractions. You do not have to go far to get to the geysers but on the other hand, is relatively small. nice.

We did this drive at sunset and were able to capture some incredible pictures of the sun setting over the water. A beautiful area anytime, but extraordinary at sunset!

we got some REALLY cool photos on this drive because the sun was setting, the steam was rising and the wind was blowing--it almost looked like we were walking around in a HOT thick fog! a really cool experience!

There is not a lot of info on firehole spring. just curious, when I look in videos there is something big in the distance, is it a train? Also what else is around it to explore?

The firehole geyser check the schedule when it goes off. You actually sit alot closer to the geyser vs old faithful and there is bench seating

Sorry, Betty, I just got this, The boardwalk is very short, years ago there was a trail back from there for some distance but that is were the extremophiles were found for research and it is now closed. There are two boardwalks at the end, left and right, do both. Say 10 minutes each? Many buffalo in the spring. But before you go that far be sure to stop on the left as you drive in to see the bubbles rise from the Firehole pool, before you get to Great Fountain.
