It's not comparable to Avalanche Peak but a normal tourist will be able to hike to the top of it on a wide trail. There you'll see the area around Grand Canyon of Yellowstone.

We hiked up via the Chittenden Road. We started off around 11 am. The road is wide and well maintained. The two of us aren't in the greatest shape (43 yrs old and 74 yrs old) so we took it slow and easy. For me,...More

We hiked Mt. Washburn on September 29. Beautiful day with lots of sun which made the 40 degree temps feel warmer. Be aware that right now there is lots of snow on the mountain from bottom to top. It was slushy at the bottom maybe...More

The Mt. Washburn area was good to us in several ways. The views are outstanding and we ended up with 6-8 inches of snow while we were in the park up here. It was a winter wonderland and the long range views were even better...More

This is a stunning hike that you need to allow sufficient time of several hours to complete. The difficulty is moderate. There are incredible views from here. At the top is a ranger manned firelookout. If you are fortunate, you may see bighorn sheep on...More

There was a lot of wildlife in the way up including a couple black bears and some rams. The views are great. There was snow on the ground already in mid Sept.

This is a well-maintained but very long and strenuous trail to one of the few ranger-manned firelookout stations still remaining in the US.

We took 1h 17m to reach the top, and 1h 7m to go back down. The hike itself is of Moderate difficulty level and is suitable for all ages. The views are brilliant and you'll probably run into some wildlife on the way.

I am 63 years old and in good shape but this trail was too steep for me to climb plus I was scared of bears. Trail had loose gravel at times.

We decided to check out the view at the top of Mount Washburn, so turned in from the loop road north of Canyon Village. It was a dirt and stone washboard at the bottom ! If no one is coming, do your vehicle a favor...More

Most people will never need or use bear spray. Nevertheless, I recommend buying/renting it because this will provide you with a measure of security on the trails.
