Our ski and snowboard club had about 28 people who took a Snow Coach tour through Yellowstone Vacations (aka Buffalo Bus Touring Company) on February 1, 2017. The tour was wonderful, as was our tour guide Karen. She was very friendly and knowledgeable. She gave us a lot of information along the way, but did not talk the entire time. It was a perfect balance between tour guiding and quiet. She also had eagle eyes, finding wildlife that I doubt any of us would have spotted without her help. We saw lots of bison, of course, but we also saw elk, eagles, coyotes, and even one fox. I would highly recommend this tour to any and all who love the great outdoors. Ask for Karen. I'm sure they have other excellent guides, but I can assure she is one of the best. We were staying at Big Sky resort. Karst Stage provides roundtrip bus pickup at the Huntley lodge, to West Yellowstone where the Snow Coach is waiting.

If you travel to Yellowstone park in the winter (which I highly recommend), chances are you will be taking a snow coach from Mammoth to the Old Faithful Snow Lodge. There is also access to the park from West Yellowstone, but as far as I know, visitors from either entrance are not able to drive their own vehicles in the interior of the park during the winter. The main point of this part of the snow coach trip is to get you from Mammoth to the Old Faithful Snow lodge. It takes 3 to 4 hours, but this includes stops for bathroom breaks and one or two scenic areas along the way. We weren't sure what to expect but found that our driver was very friendly and gave an overview of the surrounding area and history of the park. It was a really beautiful drive and a smooth ride - although it depends on the weather and how recently the roads have been groomed. We hit a few bumps on the way back but overall it was a nice ride. The operator's website is pretty informative and we found that they did a good job of keeping on schedule. The only thing that I would mention is that while the coaches are heated, make sure to bundle up appropriately for the weather. You will get out of the coach a few times for scenic areas and it can get a little chilly in the coach if they are ventilating in order to prevent the windows from fogging up. The other tours that leave from Old Faithful and go to Lake Yellowstone, a night sky tour, the Canyon, and other nearby areas are highly recommended and enjoyable. Some of the other tours involve longer hikes and dressing appropriately for the weather is even more important.
