This National Historic Site marks the location of the Waiilatpu Mission, a Presbyterian mission ministering to the Cayuse Indians from 1836 to 1847. The mission, a way station for Oregon Trail pioneers, ended tragically with the killing of missionaries by the Cayuse.

Its a pretty great place to watch sunset, and generally its quiet. Great for a quick break during studies or to just sort of meander about outside with the SO.

This is story of how good intentions can turn very bad. History isn't always pretty and in this case, it's downright ugly.

It was raining hard so didn't spend much time exploring the actual site, but the interpretive center was excellent. We watched a very informative movie and the ranger what delightful to talk to. Plan to go back in the spring.

This is a national Parks site. Small but worth the visit. You will be surprised about how the area was settled, the influence of the missionaries and the native Americans. Nice little museum, off the main freeway.

This place is one of the most important historical sites in the West, partly because it was an important stopping point on the Oregon Trail and partly because the killing of the Whitmans had such an impact on the mindset of people back East. The...More

We enjoyed the museum displays and our walk around the grounds, but can't recommend the movie, which was disappointing in its lack of objectivity. For example, the culture and values of the 18th century natives are described in glowing detail by a tribal spokesperson who,...More
