About
Valley Forge National Historical Park, one of more than 400 national parks managed by the National Park Service, is a 3,452 acre national park located approximately 18 miles northwest of Philadelphia. Valley Forge National Historical Park is nationally significant as the location of the 1777-78 winter encampment of the Continental Army under General George Washington. Few places evoke the spirit of patriotism and independence, represent individual and collective sacrifice, or demonstrate the resolve, tenacity and determination of the people of the United States to be free as does Valley Forge. The historic landscapes, structures, objects, and archeological and natural resources at Valley Forge are tangible links to one of the most defining events in our nation’s history Here the Continental Army under Washington's leadership emerged as a cohesive and disciplined fighting force.

- amy v24 contributionsWorth the trip .The park may be small but well worth the trip We did not take the trolley tour but walked the same route as the trolley. Each stop along the paths was well-marked with stunning views. The highlight was Washington Headquarters and the Park Ranger whose insight into living conditions, people, and daily life was informative without being dull or overwhelming.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 19 October 2023
- RumzzzIrving, Texas129 contributionsHistoric beautyThe park is well maintained and offers a safe 360° driving route across its outer borders, as well as several trails for pedestrians and cyclists. Even in harsh winter (December), this was beautiful, I can only imagine what it must be like in summer or spring. We didn’t need to pay to enter or drive around, although I suspect there are paid tours available.Visited December 2023Travelled with familyWritten 6 January 2024

- Kevin BMount Juliet, Tennessee3,973 contributionsLovely historical park!We were lucky enough to tour the park last year on a trip back home to PA as I had never been here despite growing up in PA. We stopped at the Visitor Center to grab a map and we did a self-guided driving tour, which allowed us to stop and see all of the sites in the park and go at our own pace. It's quite a large historical park and it was very interesting to learn more about what these people went through during the winter of 1777-1778. We got lucky and came on a beautiful day and it was wonderful to just walk around and learn history. We loved coming here and would recommend this park to anyone who loves American history!Visited June 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 24 January 2024
- MeryMeCoGalesburg, Illinois937 contributionsBeen looking forward to this for a long timeWe arrived earlier than we thought so we got to spend a little time at Valley Forge for two days. The first day we watched the movie and bought some items at the gift shop. We had tickets for the trolley ride on the second day and really enjoyed that. The guide was excellent and the rangers at the Potts House were interesting to listen to. It was just so interesting to see all the things I've been reading about for months and years.Visited April 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 8 May 2024
- JessieVirginia238 contributionsA must-do for a Rev War fanMy sister and I stopped by, being Rev War fans. Valley Forge is very well done! We drove as we didn't have much time, but it's laid out such that someone wanting to walk or bike can also easily get around. The house Washington stayed in still stands and is absolutely worth the visit. When you go to visit it, you don't have to take the long walkway if you don't want to. Go down to the end of the train station and there's some stairs that will drastically shorten your walk.Visited March 2024Travelled with familyWritten 22 May 2024
- sarahvirginia2016Richmond, Virginia107 contributionsA National Park FavoriteMy husband and I brought our bicycles and had a wonderful day riding around Valley Forge. The biking/walking is all off road and we had a wonderful time seeing the beautiful pastoral landscape and visiting Washington's Headquarters and the chapel. It seems that the park is much loved by the locals. There were lots of people walking their dogs and flying kites.Visited May 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 28 May 2024
- SfromJerseyBerkeley Heights, New Jersey91 contributionsMuch better than I anticipatedI had low expectations because there was no actual fighting that took place here, but I was pleasantly surprised how fascinating this all was. The park is beautiful and well maintained and has so much history. We did the trolley tour and I think that was the best way to see and learn because the park is so massive. Afterwards we grabbed a map from the visitor center and went back and visited places we either didn’t get off the trolley for or wanted to see more of. We ended up being there about half a day for a relaxing and educational time well spent.Visited June 2024Travelled with familyWritten 10 June 2024
- Ross TPortland, Texas291 contributionsThey Were Determined To PersevereOur time at the National Historical Park was well spent. We viewed the interpretive museum, watched the informative movie, and dutifully spent money in the gift shop (tee shirt for grandson). I have a friend who informed me that he had an ancestor at Valley Forge, so I looked him up on the on-line muster roll, and found him. The process was straight forward and easy. My friend was overjoyed that he is the descendant of a Revolutionary War Veteran. Afterward, we drove around the park. The highlight of the driving tour was the actual house that Washington used for his headquarters. It's layout or rooms and furnishings were historically accurate. The Ranger at the headquarters was very courteous and a wealth of information. We very much enjoyed our half-day visit.Visited May 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 10 June 2024

We enjoyed a visit here on a warm spring afternoon. We paid for the downloadable audio tour and followed the 9 stops. It was a great way to explore the park and learn about the history of the area for less than $10. Audio was about 1 hour but with stops it will take 2-3 hours.
There was so much more to see and if we had more time we would have done some hiking or brought a picnic to enjoy.
It was a busy day so parking was tight at most stops. We were also disappointed that two stops on the tour were blocked off.
Gift shop and visitors center are closed. Rangers are available to pass out maps and Junior Ranger Badge packets.

I probably haven't ever rated any site associated with the NPS lower than a 5 but that's because they are all SO significant. Valley Forge is no different. We arrived around 3:15, knowing it would get dark at 4:30-45 and were able to get the essence of the park in that short time frame, though we'd recommend you spend at least double that if you have the time. Probably the most powerful location in the whole park to us was Washington's headquarters - the original building our first president used as his HQ while at Valley Forge. Again, just tons of history to see and take in throughout VFNHP. But there's just something truly special about knowing you are standing in the same location as our forefathers did. Incredible place that is a bucket list item.

Good reminders about some of the American history lessons that my generation was taught in school... And that has likely been overlooked for the younger generations.
Having a visual image enhances and reinforces the book knowledge. I had no grasp of the vastness of that winter encampment. It boggles the mind how they managed the communications and logistics of feeding and housing that many men in adverse circumstances with the lack of technology we take for granted today.
Although the visitor center is still closed, you can still learn a lot on the driving tour. Pick up a map before you start though... If you can find one.

Valley Forge National Historical Park is a place where one may spend as a couple hours or an entire day enjoying the twenty-six miles of trails and see many historical buildings. We were on our way home from central PA and decided to take a detour to see the park. Admission to the park itself is free. The visitor's center is a very nice building with a gift shop, restrooms, and rangers available to take about what the park has to offer. We had limited time; however, we picked up a map and did the self guided encampment tour which covers most of the main attractions in the park. To stay on the correct route be watchful of the small green and yellowish brown "Encampment Tour" route signs. There are other roads that cross through the park and make it confusing at times. Also, be mindful of bikers, and people walking who use the roads at times instead of the obvious sidewalks for pedestrians. There are parking areas near the major attractions to park and enjoy the areas. It is a worthwhile stop for those who like history or are in the area. There are bicycles for rent, and various programs and tours at times.

October is a beautiful month to tour Valley Forge. Although Washington did not fight any battles here, he chose the location for its natural defenses. We started at the visitor center and received good directions from a ranger. Unfortunately, the movie and walk around displays were not available for viewing, but the movie is viewable on-line. You drive along the park perimeter, stopping at the various sites. The park is shared with locals enjoying the walking paths, as Valley Forge is in an increasingly urbanized area facing traffic issues. Parts of the tour route are shared with local busy roads, however be sure to travel on the one-way peaceful inner drive through the forest. The National Memorial Arch is a highlight. Washington's quarters and adjacent train station were not available for touring due to recent flooding.

We visited in late December which was fitting as it gave us a sense of what it would have been like for Washington and his troops to sure up in cold weather with no shelter. We only had a few hours so we watched the excellent introductory film which is narrated by Laura Linney. We spent some time in the museum which is really well done, particularly as it appeals to both adults and kids. I could have spent more time going through the exhibits but we booked the trolley tour. We were lucky to be the only customers for that tour so our guide, Amy, was able to personalize the experience to us and to stop in a few locations that aren't on the main tour. We also had lots of attention from the rangers who really helped bring Valley Forge history to life. This is clearly more than just a job for them. We enjoyed our chat with Steve and he was able to connect what was happening in Valley Forge with global events and trends (be sure to check out the exhibit he did on this on the second floor of the visitors center). He and our ten year old son got into a great conversation on British battles in South Africa and how they informed British military strategy. It was amazing to tour Washington's headquarters and to be in the same room where the general sat and strategized. Such a tiny place for so many people. I was happy to know that Washington paid to rent the place instead of commandeering it. I only wish we had had a few more hours for our visit. The park is beautiful and there is more we could have seen.

My family and I decided to tour the Valley Forge National Park on our way to the Philadelphia airport. We thought we would just quickly drive through the park, but didn’t realize how vast the area was. Settled on approximately 35,000 acres of land, Valley Forge is a great place to both view history and take a nice LONG walk with the family. There are many places to stop and see along the way with the occasional living museum exhibits. The end of our tour included a walk though the house that General George Washington occupied during the encampment of the Continental Army. Well worth the time and at zero cost. I would definitely recommend this to anyone interested in U.S. history, especially the Revolutionary War.

There weremultiple stops and places to visit as you drive through Valley Forge. I would suggest starting at the Visitor’s Center to plan your stops and get a map. If you have young children be sure to ask the Ranger for a Junior Ranger guide. The gift shop has toys, books, clothing and snacks. Take water with you because the heat is intense in the summer. Bikes were available to rent and the paths were throughput the park. Highlights included Washington’s headquarters, (the buildings were closed) the arch, and statues and dwellings throughout the park.

With my day off from work, my husband and I visited two national historical parks in Pennsylvania on a late fall day. This historical park is free and features a lot of trails that Pennsylvanians enjoy walking, running and biking. This park is about the battle fought at Valley Forge during the Revolutionary War. It is about a 10 mile loop. You follow signs that say "Encampment Tour." Parts of it are on a very busy road that was difficult to turn left onto. The most interesting feature of this national historical park was the house that George Washington stayed in for 6 months. It is closed due to flood damage from Hurricane Ida in September. The visitor center is large and features a lot of gifts.

Buy the ~$7 audio tour at the visitors center and do the self-driving audio tour. The tour is easily accessed via your cell phone camera redirecting a QRL code to the audio. There are 9 stops on the tour with adequate parking. Each stop provides more narrative about the area and you can stop and restart the audio ad you take your time hiking around the park. Very well organized, easy to follow and sync with drive progress. Loved the period music that accompanies the narration.

Is there room to park an RV if I visit for the day?
Written 17 June 2020
I see most travelers allowed 2-3 hours--I know we were there longer. The movie, if you get in at the right time, is about 20 minutes and the trolley, which I highly recommend, is 90 minutes, so there's 2 hours right there. After the trolley, my husband and I drove the grounds and took pictures of places we especially liked, such as the arch and Washington's Chapel, which was gorgeous. Maybe 3 hours is right, but we were pushing 4. It's NOT an all day thing.

Yes cause the last tour starts at 3pm and it’s a 45-minute tour. I recommend to book your tour online as it gets filled quickly.

Which is better to visit---Valley Forge or Washington's Crossing? Is it possible to both in one day.
Written 17 August 2016
If you are going to walk to most of the exhibits at valley forge, you need to schedule about 5 hours. That way you can listen to the lectures at the visitors center, Washington's headquarters, and the huts. Then there is the driving tour, and the Movie at the theater. It will be a full day doing both.

How long does the driving tour take? Where is the chapel everyone keeps talking about? Is it on the premises? We love historical sites. We won't arrive until about 2pm. I noticed they close at 5. How much will we be able to do? We really want to do the driving tour and take in sights.
Written 12 August 2016
We walked around the park figuring that the men camped out there for the winter did the same. I think it gave us a better appreciation for the time they spent there. Three hours would give you plenty of time to drive part of it and walk part of it...

If you're driving, you can go as fast as you like and someone can narrate from the map. But easier, faster and more informative to park and take the tour for 1.5(?) hrs and have someone else drive and talk.

Can I do a self-guided tour by car earlier or later than the hours of 9:00 - 5:00?
Written 10 March 2016
Definitely. The park is open during daylight hours everyday. I would recommend stopping by the visitors center to get a map and then starting a car tour. There are a few parking lots throughout the park where you can stop and walk to nearby sites if you want.
