Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Just a short walk from Waikiki this place has a little sand beach and lots of reef great for fishing, snorkeling or a simple lunch.

My husband and I have driven past this small beach park many times driving east on Diamond Head Road from the intersection of Kalakaua and Diamond Head Road. There is no parking at this beach park. We parked near the fountain at the east end of Kalakaua Avenue and walked a few blocks around the neighborhood of charming homes that reminded me of Carmel, California. Then we went east along Diamond head Drive and very quickly came to Makalei Beach Park. The park is dominated by a very large Hau Tree which shades much of it.There are several picnic tables in the shade on a graveled area around the base of the tree. A sidewalk goes to the walkway along the water. at the right corner of the park as you face the ocean you can walk onto a sandy beach. To the left is a cement walkway that goes all the way to the next beach park. It has a metal railing. You can walk about a third of the way and it is fairly wide and then it narrows. My husband uses a wheelchair and we were able to go along the walkway all the way to the next beach park. However once we got there it was impossible to get into the park with the wheelchair. Fortunately my husband was able to stand up by holding onto the railing and I lifted his wheelchair up and turned it around and he was able to get back into it and we returned to Makalei Park. Along the narrower part of the walkway it was just wide enough for the wheelchair. The walk way has a few spots that could use some repair as the cement is crumbling. The worst surface for the wheelchair to go over is along the railing in Makalei Park itself. That is why I rated it very good and not excellent. There are no restrooms at the park, but there is a shower where you can rinse off the sand from the beach close to the right hand corner of the park where you can walk onto the beach to the right of the park that I described earlier.

Mākālei Beach Park, Diamond Head, Oahu Hawaii
Near Diamond Head Lighthouse is a nice small and private beach about a 30min walk from Outrigger Waikiki if you follow the coastline towards Diamond Head Lighthouse. Good snorkelling spot or just a swim. The park next to the beach offers welcome shade when you want to get out of the sun.

Makalei Beach Park is small and may well disappear during some tides, but it's an oasis of calm compared to the beaches in Waikiki. It's buried in a residential neighborhood (worth looking at also). It's a bit of a walk from Waikiki, but well worth it.

Small quiet beach park. Has access to a small beach you can walk on at a lower tide. On high tide beach is very small. Beautiful place to have a quiet sunset and nice place to look for whales.
A walkway will take you from this beach to leahi beach park. Another beautiful setting.

I have lived in this neighborhood for 56 years, and don' plan on moving anywhere soon, we have the best surf spots this side of Waikiki beach, all the way to Doris Dukes, mansion. In fact there never was a "makalei" beach park until the late 1979's when the bounght one tiny property and the beach. And then 2 others were bought out by the city and that's when it became and mini-park. However they never took care of these 2 parks. The homes that were torn down to make way were much better looking. To bad, because that's the way the City and County takes care of all the. Drive by the old Honolulu stadium and that's a perfect example of their work.

I call this "Secret Beach" 'cause not many people know about this small, secluded beach.
I'd found this beach a few months ago while walking along Diamond Head Road. I knew it would be great since there's very few people there, the water's clear, and there's no parking nearby -- meaning you have to live around there or walk a ways to get there.
Spent an hour that last Friday while the wife was shopping nearby. Enough time to get a feel for the beach and water. Not nearly enough time to really relax though.
The beach is maybe 200 yards long? Nice clear water despite it being fairly windy. I think I saw about eight other soles there. Nice.
