...two trails here that are getting mixed up in the reviews. Makapu'u Lighthouse Trail and Kaiwi Shoreline Trail, and I was on both yesterday. They use the same parking, and the big sign off the main road says Kaiwi State Scenic Shoreline. Makapu'u Lighthouse Trail is the more traveled, paved one going up to the lighthouse with stunning views - yes you can do it in flip-flops. I wouldn't (again) on Kaiwi Shoreline Trail which is pretty rocky at times; I almost slipped and busted something. Whatever - I veered off the trail when I came to a divide and found a great little beach that was fairly secluded especially being a Saturday: not too many people and only one dog swimming. I think it's called Alan Davis Beach, and here is where you get closest to Pele's Chair - a kinda iconic rock formation. Hey I went a little further this way and found some rocky tidal pools with crystal clear water. This is where I took a dip and washed the funk off from the climb up to Makapu'u Lookout. The water was so relaxing that I kinda felt buzzed from it all, so I didn't finish the rest of the Kaiwi Trail and went back to my car. Coming here was a nice way to spend an afternoon and got some good exercise and maybe even water therapy no less.

Generally it is a better trail than Makapuu Trail. It is free and it's about a 2.5 miles round walk. If you are lucky enough, like us, you'll have a beautiful day. I recommend to start early cause it can get crowded later in the day and bring water for there lots of sun and hardly any shade. Anyone who been there knows it's a very nice trail, and I'm sure most people will enjoy Ka'iwi and will appreciat its quietness. The trail starts right next at the end of the parking lot just before the Makapuu Lighthouse hike take unpaved road to the right hand side. 😎

Nice paved trail with great views of the mountains and sea. Doable in flip flops but I’d recommend athletic shoes. It’s fairly steep but I’d still say it was an easy hike.

This trail was so great for our whole family. It was paved from bottom to the top and nice and wide The kids felt like they were just walking up a large hill the whole time. We have a 6,8,11 and 12year old with us and they all managed just fine on this trail . They probably found this trail one the easiest between Diamond Head, and the Pill box on the North shore trails. We stopped at this beautiful lookout about 1/2 way up to watch some whales jumping. Pretty much from almost all the lookouts we would just watch and look for the blow holes. We were there mid February which I am thinking is whale 🐳 season. The views at the top were breathtaking. Loved this trail 🤙

There are so many hiking trails in Oahu and the views on this trail is spectacular and amazing. This is good family and it only take an hour & half at the most to hike it. I recommend to start early cause it can get crowded later on of the day and bring water for there lots of uphill.
