- Sven2rockSydney, Australia20 contributionsEasy and cheap way to get around HonoluluWe used The Bus to get to Diamond Head, Pearl Harbour and Waikele Outlets from Waikiki over 2 days. The Bus did not let us down, ran on time, really well set out, with ID nos on the stops, announcements of each stop etc. The drivers were so polite and very helpful, cannot rate them highly enough.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 9 October 2023
- sparkyart53@yahoo.comReno, Nevada13 contributionsSkip the rental car!The Bus is a good deal. We rode several different routes - the longest being the Number 42 east west route from Diamond Head to Ewa Beach. Buy a HOLO pass at any ABC store. You can reload the pass online, and we left our passes behind for our room attendant since we didn't use them up. This pass is a good way to get to Pearl Harbor and the Arizona Memorial. It avoids paying for parking! Allow about an hour to get to Pearl on a busy day, so you can make your reservation time. Be sure to go back out to the highway bus stop at top of hill to get back to Waikiki (east). If you board at the westbound stop where you get off for Pearl Harbor/Arizona, you will be riding all the way west to Ewa Beach. We went that way on purpose, but if you have kids with you, it might make for a long day. As with many locals, I would recommend wearing a face mask if bus is crowded. Also, A/C on bus is quite chilly.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 26 October 2023
- Eddy124 contributionsThe Best Bus System in the WorldGet a HOLO card from Kalihi Transit Centre (M-F)office hrs. or 7-11/Foodland, pay cash load it up and explore the whole island. Waikiki(Kuhio Ave) and Ala Moana Centre have lots of bus routes towards N/W/E parts. Leave your driving behind and expensive gas & parking, enjoy and relax on the bus. Bus #52(Ala Moana)transfer to #60(Haleiwa town)to North Shore and Turtle Bay. #52 bus will pass by Dole Plantation arrive at town Haleiwa. Then take #60 towards North Shore(you might see Green Turtle lying on the beach). Either you can have lunch at Haleiwa or go to Turtle Bay Resort by bus #60. After exploring the North, you can either take the same routine(bus#60 to #52)the fastest way(2 hrs. less stops, mostly highway)back to Ala Moana Centre. “Or” take bus#60 from Turtle Bay Resort towards the East Coast and back to Ala Moana(3 1/2 hrs because more stops). Make sure ask the bus driver see which bus#60 go to Haleiwa and which #60 go to Ala Moana Centre. If you go to Makaha Beach, take the “C”Express, less stops. If you go to Ewa Beach, take “E”Express, less stops.Visited November 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 22 November 2023
- Shengyi G2 contributionsTheBus and Dabus2TheBus system is one of the best system in the U.S. It is very convenient to go around with TheBus. The drivers are very friendly to tourists and answer questions clearly and patiently. However, both Google map and Dabus2 cannot provide 100% correct information. Actually, the route names and stops on Dabus2 are not intuitive or even misleading to visitors and must be improved. I found a few paper maps in Ala Moana Center. The paper maps are very clear about the direction and arrival time. I will suggest TheBus put paper maps in the hotels so that visitors can get the maps easily.Visited December 2023Travelled with familyWritten 13 December 2023
- M&JRFort Worth, Texas1,175 contributionsEfficient and Cost Effective Transportation System on OahuAs senior citizens, the Bus system is an absolute bargain to get around Waikiki, Honolulu, and Oahu. At rush hour, the buses can be jam packed. We purchased the Holo card with auto reload since we visit every year or two. The Holo card is efficient instead of fumbling for dollars in paying for your rides. The Google app is pretty good to use in catching and knowing the times and where to catch a bus. Look at the various bus options especially the before and after walking distance, since it might make sense to catch another bus number.Visited January 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 4 February 2024

- Paul_in_AustraliaMitcham, Australia454 contributionsExcellent public transit but not always easy for tourists and visitors to navigate. My partner and I used TheBus during our recent visit to Honolulu. We are seniors but purchased an adult weekly ticket for $32. It was a Holo card that can only be purchased at 7/11 stores. There are other outlets but not for weekly tickets A single ride costs $3 fur adults or $1.25 for seniors. A single ride is just that: no transfers. TheBus covers must if Oahu island and there are some wonderfully scenic routes to explore. We observed few tourists outside the Waikiki/Aka Moana/Downtown/Airport/Pearl Harbor corridor. The new automated Skykine rail line is a fascinating and scenic ride but its location is out of the way and not convenient to tourists and visitors. Information is hard to come by and we observed many tourists struggling. Some drivers were helpful; others decidedly not. But it must be remembered they are driving in heavy traffic much of the time. There is a telephone timetable inquiry number but I found the operators had trouble understanding people who spoke English but with a foreign accent. There is an information office but it is remotely located well away from tourist areas. My experience was the staff were hostile to anyone speaking English with a foreign accent and most reluctant to offer information.Visited April 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 23 April 2024

The bus service is cheap and convenient.espevcially for seniors. Show your medicare card and a bus ride costs only $1. If you are going to be there for a few days, then go to a transit center and they will give you a senior pass $6 for a whole month of travel on as many buses as you can use. We went to the Kalihi Transit center for $1 each and rode the buses for 7 days for only $6 each! The buses go just about anywhere even the North shore where the surfing competitions are held.
Tell the bus driver where you are going and he will make sure that you get off at the right stop. Several times they gave us directions if the place was not directly on the bus route.
A trip may be a little bit slow because hte buses make a lot of stops. Also a lot of seniors ride the bus and the bus driver waits until they are seated before he starts to move. Also, people in wheel chairs use the buses, and the bus driver sets the wheelchair restraints in place for them before he moves.
It is part of the culture of Oahu.

I am not sure what the bus drivers have for breakfast but I want some. We waited until the morning rush was over to catch our number 2 bus to Kalihi Transit Station to get a Seniors Holo card for me because we are here for 2.5 months. This bus has limited stops so the bus driver asked where we wanted to get off just in case we had made an error. So many people stepped on board only to have the driver advise them of which bus to catch to get to where they wanted to go. So many didn't have the right money but that didn't phase the driver either - we are talking extremely patient and helpful drivers. When we got to the office at Kalihi the lady behind the counter couldn't have been more friendly and helpful. Next year we will pay the annual fee for a 3 months stay. Yes fares have increased but this is certainly one of the easiest ways to get around the island and all the staff deserve a medal for tolerance. Well done folks - we love DaBus

They have recently introduced the HOLO CARD for THE BUS! It is so easy to get and use - just go to a designated ABC store in Waikiki. It is a good deal because after 2 rides in a day, the fare is capped and the rest of the day is free. For us (seniors) staying 3 weeks, the cap will be $20 for the month starting July 1st and $45 for the year which is great for returning in the winter months.
Use Google maps or Maps Apps to find the bus stops and route to get to your destination. Always ask the bus driver when you get on the bus to make sure it is the right one. Last Saturday, another passenger and my phones showed different bus numbers to the same destination. It turned out the buses we could take were totally different. Most of the bus drivers are so nice and helpful!
It is so convenient that we cancelled our $100+US/day car rental this trip!

We used this public transportation to visit Pearl Harbor and back, staying at the Hilton Hawaiian Village. There is a great on line app which explains how , where and when to catch the bus you need. Signage was good and easy to find. The drivers we had were very friendly, helpful and polite. The bus stop leaving Pearl Harbor was different than where we were dropped off and the driver made sure to point it out and explain to all of us how to return. The day we rode was a 50% off day for senior citizens so we rode to Pearl Harbor and back for $12 each. The traffic on this island is nuts and we appreciated having someone doing the driving for us!!

TheBus was our only form of transportation for seven days. We used a variety of bus routes to get to anywhere we wanted. Visited the Sea Park, North Shore, Walmart, up and down Waikiki, out to dinner, etc. We recommend using a combination of Google Map, which shows you where to catch the bus, which route(s) will take you to your destination, and where to walk once you are off the bus. You can watch the reader board and hear the voice over in the bus as you follow the route on G-map. After one trip, NEVER got confused or lost. If you are 65 or over, your day trips using the HOLO card should only be $2.00/day. But the ABC stores (where we replenished the cards) require going to their "HQ" at Foodland. I recommend looking up senior, and other, discounts ahead of the trip and talking with TheBus staff. They're very friendly and helpful, by the way.

When visiting the Honolulu/Waikiki area we never rent a car, we use The Bus. Convenient, clean, with numerous stops, buses that come often, and it is a cheap way to get around. Bus drivers are knowledgeable, helpful, and usually very accommodating. A bonus: if you're 65 or older, show your Medicare card and you'll get a day pass for only $2! If you've just been swimming, the bus can be a bit chilly. The ubiquitous ABC Stores have maps of bus routes. Helpful hint: at each bus stop there is a number, use this, rather than street names to find where you are standing.

My family went to Oahu, Hawaii January 2020 and was thinking of renting a car. However, we found Oahu public bus transportation can take you anywhere on the island. It is cheaper and you don’t have to find and pay for very expensive parking. It is easy to use. Their traffic is bad and parking is expensive if you can find it. The bus drivers are very friendly and helpful!

'The Bus' has proven to be very efficient and extremely helpful for getting around the island. EVERY driver is friendly and helpful with directions. They are all glad to help & answer ur questions.
Just coordinate your time and schedule your events with 'The Bus' schedules. It's the most affordable transportation on the island.
You won't get harrassed by anyone. They're cleaner than most major cities.
*Adult (all day) Daypass $5.50. **This includes all your transfers.
Aloha!! Good luck & enjoy the scenery.

We used The Bus on 2 of our 5 days on Oahu. We purchased a Holo card for $5.50 to cover a days travel and took The Bus from Waikiki to Pearl Harbour, returning via the downtown area. We also used cash to go one way from Waikiki to Diamond Head. Super easy.
The Buses are clean, keep good time (in my limited experience) and well organised. The drivers we experienced were all good. They enforce mask compliance which is good (and brave). And for $5.50 you can ride the bus all day wherever you want to go.

What route of the bus to take to go around the island?
Written 16 October 2023
Is the 411 bus schedule leaving Makakilo Heights heading back to Kapolei synchronized with the 461 bus heading to the Rail Station. This morning The bus passed me on Makakilo Drive heading downhill at 7:03 (just before the Makakilo Rec Center and the 461 bus was scheduled to leave Palahia St and Makakilo Drive at 7:03 as well. I was wondering if the 411 bus would always arrive at the Makakilo Dr/ Palahia Dr Bus stop once an hour to make a connection to catch the rail?

Sorry I was a tourist and familiar with Waikiki Area only
We went to Kapokei few time riding the bus and we got lost at our last time.
Finally we had to hitch ride and the lady was so nice to drive us to a bus station, it’s been 4-5 years I couldn’t remember much

Hello, does the bus also run in the morning around 5 am?(Monday 09/19/2022) We would love to go to Kualoa Ranch and need to be there at 8 am.Thank you in Advance
Written 4 August 2022
I don’t know at what time The Bus starts but when we visited Kualoa Ranch, we included a pick-up by the Ranch Bus (it costs about $10 each I think). It picks up from a few stops only so you may have to walk to get to your nearest stop. We were at Waikiki Beachcomber and walked less than 5 minutes to Sheraton for example. Definitely worth doing.

On Sundays, does 'The Bus' run from airport to Waikiki harbor hotel area & what #, if yes?
Written 1 February 2020
Yes, the Bus do run to the airport on Sundays from Waikiki beach hotels. You can ride the Bus from the airport with small carry on luggage (not big one). Check the Bus schedule for timings. Hope this helps.

Any issue getting on the bus from the airport to Waikiki with a small carry-on? Thanks.
Written 5 January 2020
No, not at all. They are happy to assist tourists from the airport to Waikiki. I suggest you sit near the front and listen to any conversations between the driver and other passengers to learn local terms, locations, etc. all the drivers I've met are full of Aloha and more than willing to share their local knowledge too! Just don't distract them, please. They are the best!!!

I am wondering if a carry on piece of luggage that fits in an overhead bin on an airplane can quality as a bag that will fit underneath
the seat on a bus. Thinking of taking the bus from the airport to hotel but not sure how large the area is underneath the seat.
Thanks for any support.

Do buses go from the airport close to 150 Kaphulu avenue?
Written 12 September 2019
I think it does, but the bus won't leave you right next to the airport but at rather some distance from it. You can download The Bus app and check, but my recommendation would be to arrange a pickup with the hotel. They tend to provide this kind of service for around 10$.
