- simonwilliampizzeyLeicester, United Kingdom1,274 contributionsAwesome Views Of ParadiseDiamond Head is a natural beauty located at the far right of Waikiki Beach in the paradise that is Hawaii. Diamond head is the perfect location for introducing people to hiking and whilst a challenge due to the heat, the actual incline is not an issue. At the summit, there is stunning views of the Honolulu sea front and makes the long journey to Hawaii worthwhile. I am aware that people attempt to reach the summit prior to sunset and it must be a stunning sight to see. It is important to note that since Covid, you are require to book a spot rather than just turn up. There is a small charge to visit, but it is certainly worth it. I also had the pleasure of running around Diamond Head on a number of occasions and it was an excellent run.Visited July 2023Travelled with familyWritten 15 October 2023
- JovanOrlando, Florida87 contributionsDiamond HeadIt’s a good hike. We actually walked from Waikiki Beach area and back which made the hike 9 miles. The actual hike is really short but a lot of stairs. Great views at the top but a swarm of bugs also hang out at the top. $5 to get in so make sure you pay before you enter and reserve a time. There are a lot of people on this trail.Visited January 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 4 February 2024
- Lisa JPlant City, Florida960 contributionsDiamond HeadWhat an amazing place with amazing views. If you are able and can hike up a steep dirt and rocky trail it is so worth doing. Best view in the state. Make sure you take plenty of water and a poncho if it looks like rain.Visited February 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 18 March 2024
- StephaniePhiladelphia, Pennsylvania260 contributionsIncredible Views, Easy HikeRESERVE IN ADVANCE! It was not clear to us when we got there that you need tickets in advance and cannot park in the parking lot unless you book a spot beforehand. This hike is well worth it. The views are incredible. The hike itself is easy for experienced hikers. You can get to the peak and back down in 30 minutes to an hour. The most difficult part for us was finding parking and getting stuck behind people who brought young children on the hike (I would not recommend bringing young kids).Visited April 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 24 April 2024
- Eleonore CHonolulu, Hawaii4 contributionsWorth the walk and the views!Loved doing this, was like a rite of passage! Great views, not too hard of a hike and staff were so helpful! The walk takes about 30min but might take longer as you need to take water breaks and pauses for pictures!Visited May 2024Travelled soloWritten 26 May 2024
- DKPuckMuncie, Indiana1,075 contributionsGreat Views, Great HikeThis is a big uphill hike, but doable for most people. Not good for strollers though. Great views from the top, so take some time when you get up there. The reservation system works great for a worry free parking experience.Visited May 2024Travelled with familyWritten 30 May 2024
- KimberlyChattanooga, Tennessee17 contributionsBeautiful HikePurchased our tickets ahead of time online to be able to drive inside and park. We arrived a few minutes before our time slot and parked. There are bathrooms at the base of the trail and I highly recommend stopping there before starting the trail. It is a bit of a steep climb, but the views are well worth it. There are plenty of places to stop along the way if you need a rest. This is a must see if you are in Honolulu. You will not regret it.Visited May 2024Travelled with familyWritten 31 May 2024
- ColonelReb32617Spring Hill, Tennessee142 contributionsThe must do hike of WaikikiA great hike up the scenic landmark. Take plenty of water and your reservation from the state website. People say to go early, but midday might be less crowded. We went around 9 o clock and there were tons of people going and coming. As we were descending around 10 or so, it seemed that the crowds ascending were lighter. It is not necessarily a long hike, but it is challenging, and there is a tunnel where it is very narrow but the ascenders and descenders must pass each other. If your size is such that you will take up the whole width of the tunnel or other areas on the trail yourself, that could be an awkward or embarassing situation.Visited June 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 9 June 2024
- Addison BBrentwood, Tennessee8 contributionsGreat ViewsI read reviews beforehand, so I kinda knew what I was getting into. The reviews I read were saying it's not paved, moderately difficult, and takes about an hour. For about the first 5 minutes. It actually is paved, and then the trail turns into a rocky path for the rest of the time, its also a loop. It did get steep in some areas, and there are plenty of places to take pictures of the beautiful views. I went on a day with a nice breeze and the sun shining. If you do go on hotter days, there are plenty of shaded areas to take breaks. There are some stairs, so just keep that in mind when going. When you get to the top, there are nothing, but beautiful views surrounding you, the crater, the coast, the mountains, and the beautiful city. When going, I did expect my focus to be on the crater, but my eyes were mainly on the beautiful blue coast. We spent almost 2 hours there and it was about 2 miles. I would definitely recommend going. It's great for all kinds of people, but do keep in mind that if you don't like stairs or steep walkways, this probably isn't for you.Visited June 2024Travelled with familyWritten 26 June 2024
- Susan W33 contributionsGreat experience! It was a good day!! We are not in great shape and don’t hike regularly. We took our time making frequent stops on the trail and steps. If we were tired we stopped and let people pass-there are plenty of spots to stop! Take plenty of water and a camera. Go as early as possible to avoid crowds and the heat. Going up take the easier path to the left-great overlooks and be sure to check out all the overlooks on the way up as they are great views and good places to rest and cool off. Go through the bunker and take the spiral staircase and 99 steps on the way down. Coming down is pretty easy, but really watch your footing.Visited September 2024Travelled with familyWritten 24 September 2024

After five visits to Oahu I decided that I would make the time to hike the trail. It did not disappoint, as I found it both challenging and rewarding. The nice thing is that the trail is mostly paved or rock, although there are a few very narrow points on the trail. There are also some very steep stairs located at the top of the trail, this is a none issue for athletes but non-athletes can definitely make it as long as they take rest stops as needed and stay hydrated. The views are nice but what was more rewarding to me was completing the hike. . I would recommend this to anyone that likes a challenge and is physically capable of hiking on steep trails. My non-athletic 57 year old wife made it 95% up the trail and a friend that weighs 350+ made it about 80% up the trail.

We chose to visit Diamond Head at the most crowded time of day- 10am during the holiday break. While the hike was fairly easy, the crowds definitely took away from any kind of peaceful hike. My entire family had wished we had arrived around 7:30 or 8 to beat the crowds. The views from the top were fantastic but super crowded.

Wow what a view is all I can say. It was well worth all the stairs at the top. Paved path part of the way a little rocky the rest. Not a bad hike about an hour round trip. We took hotel shuttle as parking is very limited. I must recommend the Pineapple Dole Whip at the bottom afterwards it's better than the Dole Plantation’s.

What a sad time when people cannot follow simple directions on a trail to stay off of things and to stay within the allowed areas. This trail was crowded with so many people who had zero concerns for park rules. The park must have more personnel on the trail to control the crowds. People do not know how to behave.
This is a beautiful hike and the views are spectacular, but the crowds really are terrible. The park does a great job getting traffic in and out, but they must manage the trail better.
Wear good shoes, sunscreen, a hat and take water. So many people looked overheated and miserable due to their poor choices. It is a very short trail, but you go straight up and there are stairs.

Captain mark and Ali were so much fun, dont forget your own under water camera , they had awesome island music and free fresh pineapple/cookies and water during trip. Thank youuuuu! Hubby, our 5-year-old and I hiked up Diamond Head during our vacation and it was totally worth it. Had booked the 8 AM slot as read all the recommendations about heading out early to avoid the unforgiving sun and we were glad we did. I was so sure our toddler would give up and we would just have to call it a day but perseverance and a slow pace meant we accomplished our goal. So many passerbys were proud of him and we were beaming with pride once we hit the summit. Truly beautiful photo ops on the way up and down. Pack your sun hats, water bottles (there’s a refill station by the washrooms) and towel (thank goodness for baby wipes!), wear sunscreen, something breathable and good walking shoes (we didn’t use hiking shoes and were fine) and enjoy!

I booked a time slot for 6-8 am and arrived shortly after 6 to get parking. The hike was perfect as the sun was just starting to rise making it not too hot. The views from the top were absolutely incredible and the hike really wasn't too strenuous. It had rained, so some spots of the trail had standing water or were muddy and thus slippery, but it wasn't too bad. Those steps to the peak were no joke though! Definitely book ahead of time so you get the entry time you want!

It’s easy to get swept up in shopping, the beach, dining at nice restaurants, etc. while visiting Honolulu. Don’t let an unbelievable hike leading to a fantastic view of the city pass you by, though. Diamond Head crater is within walking distance of downtown (albeit a lengthy walk at about 3 miles). I wanted a day of activity, though, and decided to walk there from a downtown hotel — thinking that I would either Uber or bus it on the return trip. The hike up to the peak takes approximately 45 minutes (it’s quicker on the way down - probably 30 minutes). If you brought hiking shoe/boots, I’d recommend wearing them as there are definitely uneven parts to the path. The view from the top is spectacular. Definitely worth a visit during your stay here.

Diamond Head is worth it for the amazing views. But it's a hike!!!! Make sure you have good walking shoes on, keep a bottle of water and are in good shape to make the climb. It takes about 30 minutes to hike up the mountain and it is unpaved, uneven, and rocky.
There are no restrooms on top or any water fountains along the way up. We did see parents with kids making this hike as well. The hike up is worth the views Once you're on top. Beautiful panoramic views of Honolulu.
You need reservations go get into the park and you need to pay for parking. You can book online. Again, good walking shoes and stay hydrated...!!!!

Is this walk safe for two 70 year olds?
Written 16 January 2023
It depends on your level of fitness/stability on uneven surfaces. The beginning of the hike is a very easy to walk trail but there are rockier parts as you move along. The stairs are tougher to climb but there are handrails and you can take rests on the way. There were people half your ages having to rest along the trail!

We are visiting in Late August with a 18mth old and 11,and 8 year old boys. We feel the hike is not suitable for us, but would like to see this site. Is there any point to visiting if not doing the hike up. Is there nice park facilities or other nice areas of interest to spend time at here. Or do we give this area a miss?
Thank you

I did see kids with parents hiking Diamond Head. I did see people wearing shoes that is better worn at the shopping complex. To some it is a moderate hike, to some it is an easy hike. I guess just go if you happen to bring your kid for regular hikes but if not, better don't. Nothing much to do at the base. But before you entering the tunnel to Diamond Head's car park, there is a public park that you can jog.

Has anyone done this with young children, aged 4. I don't think the walking is a problem for him but thinking about the safety issues.
Thanks!

Like most travelers who have answered this. The main issue or concern you have, would be is my child safe walking up this track? My answer is Yes. Its about slow & steady. At certain areas of this track there are handrails to help everyone up or down the stairs or around corners, so make sure you know where your feet are. The terrain can be a little tough but to be generally honest your pacing yourself & keeping an eye on your young fella all the way. My son & I climbed this and hes 9 years old. I have seen younger children walking this track & they do get tired. Be prepared to carry him part of the way as long as you pace yourself he might surprise you and get up there without too much hassle. With all young children i agree there are some safety issues but that's with all parents walking any track anywhere. I did carried some plasters just in case, with the usual water drinks and small snacks for energy. Take a hat and some sunscreen. The track is roughly 1.3km in length but its mostly up. Wear shoes. enjoy.

What is the best way to get from the Hilton Village to the beginning of the trail without a car? Don't mind a bit of a walk before the trail. Thanks

14 min 3.2 miles or 5.5km via Kalakaua Ave and Monsarrat Ave. It is a drive not walk.
All kinds of transport options there. Check local bus services. The name of the local buses are 'TheBus" , they go everywhere, costs about $2 to ride anywhere.
