Interesting Architecture

A nice building and interesting story behind the architecture of the building. I would recommend a visit if you are in the area.

It was raining the afternoon we had planned to walk through the Hawaii State Capitol grounds. You can walk through it anytime as there are no doors that enclose the front and back. Father Damien statue (Priest from Belgium) that helped saved the leprosy colony in Kalaupapa is in the front on S Beretania St. and a replica of the... More

The Hawaii Senate meets here and the Governor's Office is here as well. When not is session I believe you can visit. Check the website. On the left of Beretania St on the way downtown.

The Hawai'i Capitol is a great building that is not your typical Capitol/government building. Built using modern Hawaiian architecture, the building has a lot of symbolism and is on the grounds of the Iolani Palace.

Unlike most state building there are no columns, dome or marble stairs. Surrounded by a moat representing the ocean and supported by two cones reminding one of the volcanoes that formed the Hawaiian Islands. The building is sort and square almost floating in air. The manicured grounds are nice to walk around. Tours are available.

This is one of the most, if not the most, unique state capitol buildings in the US. Its open air-style is befitting for Hawaii and is also supposed to remind you of a volcano. We only got a chance to walk through and around the exterior as the doors leading inside were locked. The building is near Iolani Palace and... More

We did not tour the inside the building, instead just walked around and enjoyed the very interesting design. It needs some attention as this type of design if not kept fresh will look dated quickly.

The building has an unusual shape for a state capitol. The architecture does fit with the area and culture. It helps to learn more about the area by visiting this venue.

Driving through Downtown Honolulu you can see allot on Beretania Street and King Street too! However, the State Capital Building is unmistakable with that mote around it.
