Further along Kalanianaole Highway is the Makapuu Lighthouse hiking trail. This easy route with its moderate incline to the 647-ft. summit is a popular spot during whale season between December and April. This is a definite photo opportunity even when humpbacks aren’t spouting offshore. If you’re really ambitious, tackle a pre-sunrise hike to the top so you can grab a glorious photo of the sunrise.

Take water, it can be hot and dry but take binoculars too because the whales are spouting just offshore. We stood there for over an hour watching the whales.

After the other hikes on Hawaii, this was more like a walk in the park. Like all the reviews mention: bring water and start early!! Some people think that 9.30 is early but you're not doing yourself a favor.... We started 8.30am but that was...More

Out of everything we did I would say that this hike was our high point. It is a paved trail no more than a mile up. There are tons of great picture spots and the views of the north side of Hawaii are amazing! Bring...More

The views at the top of this trail are exquisite. The trail itself is paved, gradually inclining and directly in the sun. There are a few lookouts that have informative signs along the way about whale migrations and other topics. We even saw a lil...More

There is a paved path all the way to the out, but it is fairly long and steep. Go in the morning when cooler and parking easier. We went in afternoon and still found a decent spot to park. Be sure to lock car and...More

A short hike on a paved trail leads to this beautiful view over this world famous beach and the Molokai Channel.

Definitely worth the hike (about 2 miles). Easy hike with a paved surface. FYI...the light house is not accessible, but many other side paths to take (one goes to a blowhole). Take water! The sun was strong and it was hot. Some people took dogs,...More

Well paved path makes for easy hiking but it is definitely uphill. I'm not in the best shape and I did manage it. There are resting spots along the way with beautiful views of the ocean. Be sure to bring some water with you. The...More

We were on our way to Diamond Head and it was full so we continued up the road 10 miles to Makapu'u lighthouse trail. It was 88 degrees. The walk up was tough. We are in our 60's so it took a little longer. The...More

So there are two alternatives for this trail - easy or difficult. I'm sure most people choose the easy (paved) path but we were feeling froggy and did the difficult one. We parked in the Makapuu overlook area instead of the parking for the lighthouse...More

Yes, the trail from the parking lot to the light house viewing is paved; its uphill and not too steep and strollers should be quite possible.

All free, but parking is tight because of the popularity of the trail with locals and tourists. Go early...best time of the day.
