Further along Kalanianaole Highway is the Makapuu Lighthouse hiking trail. This easy route with its moderate incline to the 647-ft. summit is a popular spot during whale season between December and April. This is a definite photo opportunity even when humpbacks aren’t spouting offshore. If you’re really ambitious, tackle a pre-sunrise hike to the top so you can grab a glorious photo of the sunrise.

There was a paved path all the way to the top. There were humpback whale sightings at every turn! I got a really bad sunburn, despite applying multiple times, so be careful. This was somewhat disability friendly due to the paths being paved. The hike up was moderate. If you bring your dog, make sure they have booties for their... More

Love this hike! It has just been renovated, but beware, the parking lot gets crowded really quickly. You are welcome to bring a dog and I see many people with strollers, slippers, and even heels doing this hike. The first portion is a smooth slope, while the 2nd half gets steeper, but the cool ocean breezes keep you motivated to... More

A step but paved trail is the only way up. In the past couple of years, they have added a few more lookouts on the way up. Nice for a short rest. Once at the top, you have an almost breath taking panorama of views. I've hiked it in January and in May....it's much cooler and less humid in January.... More

Trail is pretty steep but paved the whole way. You will see many different types walking up this trail. Highly recommend for the views, although of note the light house was covered (for restoration?) so not visible for pictures.

This is a walk up frontage road on a steep hill. If you are looking for "hike" that is on a paved road, go for it. It is a nice work out. Unfortunately, when we went, the lookout was closed for renovations, so the view of the Lighthouse was pretty non existent. Personally, we prefer the view from Makapu'u Lookout,... More

Small parking lot so get there early, paved trail that climbs steadily up. Many spots to stop for pictures ,especially at the top where it's a 360 degree view of beaches ,islands and whales. Good cardio workout

It's close enough to Honolulu for a day trip, and the hike is doable enough, though steep, though when we got there in Dec 2016 the lighthouse was all covered for renovations. An okay view of the coast and the island, and it's free. If you're lucky you might see some whales.

This is a paved hike and on the easy side. If you are not physically able or short on time there is actually a look out/parking lot before the trail where you can pull over and get the same view you get from the top (ask a local if you can't find it!).

This hike is honestly more like a walk in the park. The way up is uphill but it's nothing extreme or unmanageable. If you have kids and dogs you want to bring make sure you get there around 7am before it heats up. This is the driest hottest part of the island and you don't want to walk that incline... More

There's a way to actually hike up to the top of the pillboxes if you're looking from the lookout point. This is more of the adventurous way up. But, you can also bring strollers up if you walk up the winding road. There are gorgeous sunrises and sunsets from here (you can see Kokohead). Also, if you're here from January... More
