Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

A nice, less crowded beach close to the Waikiki area. The beach itself is sandy but gets rockier closer to the water. The snorkeling is okay here and was not too crowded at the reefs since they are a little bit further out. The reef itself is shallow so visibility is not an issue. I saw a pretty large variety of fish and I even saw one turtle swimming around the reef and later resting at the deeper sandy bottom between the inner reef and outer reef. The water is calm and I was able to swim out pretty far and I am not an amazing swimmer.
The water gets deep quickly and you need to swim a short distance to get to the reefs, so I would not recommend snorkeling here if you are a below average swimmer.

Fort DeRussy Beach Park is behind the US Military Museum. It has a wonderful walkway, pier and sandy beach. There are many resorts off this beach, as well as eateries. You can sit and delight yourself with an ice cream from DQ watching the sunset!! So beautiful!! Enjoy this area of the beach, if you come to Honolulu.

This is your beach if you are at any of the resorts on the northwest end of of Waikiki. (Halekulani, Outrigger Reef, Hale Koa, and Hilton Hawaiian Village) We enjoyed the variety of either setting up for the day on the sand, or on the grass of the park.
The grounds are well maintained, the restrooms are typical for beach restrooms, and there are beach-equipment rental vendors. This beach is much less crowded than the "heart" of Waikiki. This is also the widest plot of sand in all of Waikiki, but we really enjoyed the grassy area on one of our visits. There were also a couple of sections in the water where reef fish could be spotted, but the water is the standard Waikiki-murky for snorkeling. The waves were very mellow. This is a place for swimming, not surfing, body boarding, or body surfing.
Walking distance to the ABC Store on Beach Walk isn't very far as well.

My wife and I strolled through Fort DeRussy Beach Park as we went from our Waikiki hotel to Ala Moana Center. It is a large tranquil green area in the midst of a bustling city. It is a good place to relax in a peaceful setting.

This is a beach north of Waikiki down to the boat harbor. There is a large park that is inland of the beach which is quite nice and shaded for those hot summer days. The park also includes the Army Museum.

Fort DeRussy Beach, Oahu Hawaii
It’s the long beach next to Outrigger Reef Hotel, good for swimming and snorkelling as it doesn’t have any waves due to the outer reef. The nearby park and military museum are worth visiting.

We came here almost daily for 2 weeks. Love the views, always rent an umbrella and 2 chairs for $25 for 2 hours (not the outrageous price some ask) and finally found a spot between Waikiki Shore and Hilton where it wasnt too bad to go in. Really worried about the erosion and dead palm trees outside Outrigger as thats not a good thing. We also hate that so many people leave ribbish here, and clear plastic straw covers and plastic bags - dont people know the turtles eat these things as they look like jellyfish to them. We still love this place and we look forward to more visitors and local kamaáina looking after it

Started at the Hale Koa Hotel for 3 weeks. Nice to be able to walk out the back and into the ocean. Clean, though the rentals for beach chairs and other stuff outrageous. Went to Walmart and saved myself $400.00. Will leave for the next hotel guest. Everything is high priced as it’s all brought in to Hawaii.

Less crowded that the nearby beaches in the heart of Hawaii. Paved walkway goes along beach down to the Hilton. Several shaded pavilions with concrete tables and stools along the way. Proximity to the Steak Shack a big plus.

I am military and want to book ASAP. What website do I use for the on base hotel for military only?
Written 24 July 2022
Hale Kao is the military-only resort there in the Waikiki area. It is a great resort, in a superb location, yet I hear that the on-site food is not the best. Not to worry, there are PLENTY of places to eat nearby. The most crowded time in Waikiki is June through August. The least crowded is September and October. The worst time to visit is December through March, not because of crowds, but because of weather. Those months are known as "the rainy season".

I am a retired navy commander. We will be traveling with another couple who are not military. Can I book two rooms?
Written 26 August 2019
I have friends here who are military retirees who have booked and paid for rooms for their non-military friends who were traveling here so I don't think it is a problem for you to reserve two rooms. Maybe you'll have to pay for both and be reimbursed by your friend. It is a customer friendly hotel and they will work w you, so my advice is to be "upfront" w them on the phone when you make the reservation. I anticipate they will tell you that as long as you have appropriate military ID and make reservation for both rooms, all will be OK and your friends will be able to pay for their room and you for yours.

We are staying at Outrigger reef and thinking about not renting a car for part of our trip to save $$$. Does “The Bus” get us to a lot of locations tourists visit??? TIA
Written 5 May 2019
Yes, easy to ride the bus. Busses are very nice vehicles. Only need to rent a car for days you will go driving around the island 🌴 otherwise the car will just sit in the hotel garage.

Can you snorkel here amongst the coral? I thought I had in 1998 at this location and the water was only about 2-3 ft.deep and I was a newbie snorkeler. Loved it and colors very vivid. A safe experience! My daughter;s family is visiting Oahu all next wk.and want to tell her to go here if snorkeling is still available. Thanks!

Mohammad1 is correct. See his answer. None of the beaches will be what you remember. They have to drag in sand from off shore. Walking on any beach in and around Waikiki and Honolulu may require swimming shoes if your feet are land lubber soft.
