Many of Hawaii’s alii (royalty) lived in Waikiki and King Kalakaua selected a 300-acre track of land at the base of Diamond Head for a public park in 1867. Today, it is a gathering place that thrives with walkers, runners, tennis enthusiasts and picnickers. Grab lunch on Kalakaua Avenue and enjoy it in one of the shaded picnic areas scattered around this colorful park.

Somewhat more peaceful

Kapiolani park and beach is not as full as Waikiki and therefore more relaxing. They often hold events there - we experienced the Okinawa festival which was quite a trip indeed

Kapiolani Park is expansive. It is possible to reach the park from most Waikiki hotels. You can also walk, jog, or exercise around the park. You can have a picnic there and use your hibachi. Great place to "people watch" and there are often soccer and other group activities to view. Location is excellent, as possibility of rain and showers... More

This was the site of the Hawaiian Royal Horse Racing Track and offers fantastic beaches, beautiful views of Diamond Head, local festivals, the Honolulu Zoo and Aquarium and "Art on the Fence" on Saturdays. It's a great place to just walk through or make a destination. Very popular on weekends, especially holiday weekends with the locals for cookouts. Less crowded... More

This is on the south end of Waikiki. It's another great park to go running, or take in a concert. On weekend they have locals selling their artwork and crafts. Another big bonus is the Honolulu Zoo is right there. A lovely well kept zoo. It's gotten better over the years. The Aquarium is right across the street. Plus a... More

On the east end of Waikiki, the band shell looks like it would be nice to attend and the beach adjacent to the park is much more low key and quieter. Also, it's adjacent to Diamond Head national monument, only a ~2 mile walk to the entrance! The zoo is adjacent to the park as well! and an aquatic center!

One of my favorite park. It's huge and you can always find a quiet place. If you feel like, there's also always to watch: a kid's football game, a japanese marriage, a luau or all kind of people. Trees are magnificent and it's feels like you could meet princess Kapiolani...

We stayed across from the park and walked around it everyday. Lovely to see so many healthy outdoor activities going on, soccer games, fitness groups, joggers, walkers, Tai chi etc. A great place for a run in the morning or evening and for people watching.

Wow! I stayed at the Mariott a few blocks away, and would find myself usuing almost every bit of free time exploring this park. And for one reason: birds! This park was just full of facinating exotic birds, one of the best urban spots on Oahu for them. I even found from regular rose-ringed parakeets and white terns. Even walking... More
