The Newport Art Museum's collections and exhibitions reflect Rhode Island's rich cultural heritage and lively contemporary art scene. We are the only museum to focus on the art and artists of Rhode Island, both historic and contemporary. The Museum is housed in the John N.A. Griswold House and the Cushing Gallery. Home for the Museum since 1916, the Griswold House is a National Historic Landmark and an Official Project of Save America’s Treasures. Designed in 1862 by architect Richard Morris Hunt, it was completed in 1864 for John N.A. Griswold, a China trade merchant and financier, and his wife Jane. Griswold House was Hunt’s first major commission in Newport and is the premier example of American Stick Style architecture. Hunt went on to design many of the grand cottages of Newport’s Gilded Age, including The Breakers, Marble House, and Ochre Court. To honor artist Howard Gardiner Cushing, an early member of the Newport Art Association, the Association erected the Cushing Gallery in 1920.The Newport Art Museum is one of only 5% of American museums to be fully accredited by the American Association of Museums.

The Newport Museum is housed in the Griswold House by R.M. Hunt. The museum is housed in two buildings. It has a great collection of regional art. When looking at the art, don't overlook the house details.

Historically, the house was beautiful and safe from modern renovations. Gallerys were a bit lack luster but enjoyable

This museum was on our list of attractions, and the visit was very enjoyable. A windy, misty day in April, not many tourists were out so we had had all the time we needed to see the exhibits and especially to study the house's interior....More

I was totally surprised that Newport had an art museum of this caliber. I was very impressed with the combination of traditional and contemporary artwork. It also seems that there is a portion of the gallery that is ever changing so you might not see...More

Do yourself a favor and avoid giving your money to the people who run this place. Stay outside and appreciate the architecture, but rude and patronizing staff and management who sponsor programs unrelated to its mission (um, art?) is not the way I want my...More

An interesting mix of new and old art, sculpture, mixed media. All well presented. Probably took about an hour. Housed in an amazing old building. Worth visiting if you are wandering Bellevue.

I went to see the local showing of Newport Photographers. Quite interesting with a large variety of styles. Walked through and viewed the entire conlection/shows in both buildings, one more historic and the other quite modern.

Only the 2nd Thursday of the month from 5pm-8pm. Otherwise I believe it's $10 an adult.
