An exceptional tour, recommended by our inn keeper, our tour guide Donna was warm and knowledgeable. The period furniture tapestries Chinese porcelain were all beautiful. Rough Point is different from the other Vanderbilt Mansions as it is comparatively modern. The rooms are tastefully decorated rather than over the top. You can see this was more than just a summer cottage for the super rich.

An incredible setting and an incredible house. Our little one loved running through the garden. The house itself is huge and I was a little dissapointed that there weren't more rooms to see.

We toured many of the Newport mansions and found them interesting but I couldn't really see them as anyone's 'home'. Especially since many were only lived in 'during the season' which was less than 8 weeks. While Doris Duke had a Renoir hanging in her...More

This mansion has the usual Newport opulence, is full of exquisite pieces, and the grounds are beautiful. In addition, learning about Ms. Duke, her lifestyle, and her foundation's continuing contributions to the betterment of Newport and key social needs makes this experience just fascinating. She...More

I really enjoyed Rough Point. I'm that guy that trails after his wife at these places looking like he'd rather be sitting on a bar stool watching a ball game but I was really impressed by Rough Point. It didn't seem like a museum like...More

We liked the tour of Rough Point better than The Breakers because: the mansion is more of a home than a museum, you can see the personality of the owner in the house, and the grounds have a better view. Also, the guide was outstanding...More

This home (109 rooms or so) is not included in the group ticket for visiting the Cottages. However, it is well worth the extra money. The guide we had was incredibly knowledgeable and really gave a wonderful tour. The great thing about this house is...More

Good answer by Richard B. Don't miss Rough Point, if you get a chance, watch the movie Too rich - the secret life of Doris Duke. I visited many mansions, but this is the one I made the trip for.

I don't know where cruises arrive, so I can't tell you for sure. There are bus/trolleys from the Newport Visitor's Center, but the schedule/route varies by season. On the off season they do not make as many stops, so there... More
