About
The Martin House (Buffalo, NY, 1903-05) exemplifies Frank Lloyd Wright’s Prairie House ideal and ranks as one of his finest residential works. Designed for Larkin Soap Company executive, Darwin D. Martin, the multi-residential estate is a one-of-a-kind composition consisting of the main Martin House, the smaller Barton House, a carriage house with chauffeur’s quarters and stables, a glass-roofed conservatory linked to the main house by a 100-foot pergola, and a gardener’s cottage. Tours explore the restored and reconstructed buildings, surrounding landscape, and an extensive collection of art glass and furnishings, all designed by Wright, which together form a totally integrated architectural masterwork. We welcome you to this National Historic Landmark.

Well worth it!
Nov. 2021
The house is amazing! The tour was thorough and our tour guide, Lou, was pleasant, knowledgeable, and extremely accommodating. I highly recommend taking the time to learn about the architectural genius of Frank Lloyd Wright and then go see it in person.

It was a wonderful experience!

A backstory as compelling as the restoration.
Nov. 2021
This is an outstanding restoration of a marvelous art work. The first fully realized estate by Frank Lloyd Wright lovingly and amazingly restored almost completely to its former glory. That alone would be reason enough to visit.

But I’ve been on 6 Wright tours. All of the prior tours were memorable but this was exceptional. Our guide, Dave, was a polymath who wove the history of Buffalo, Chicago, FLW and the Martin’s into a very coherent and compelling story. Bravo, Dave!

I took the 2 hour tour and it went by in the wink of an eye. I would recommend highly the longer tour. The gift shop is also quite interesting.

Thank you very much for sharing the details about your tour experience. We love sharing the story of the Martin family, Wright, and the restoration - and Dave is one of the best!

Super house
Oct. 2021
This is a wonderful house without too many of his less acceptable quirks. Nicely furnished, interesting docents and you get to see the other 2 houses on the site as well. No inside photography and a rather inappropriate sculpture display, soon to be removed, I understand.

Great tour of an architectural masterpiece
Aug. 2021
I've been to several Frank Lloyd Wright homes before, including Fallingwater, perhaps his best known work, along with Kentuck Knob and the Polymath Park complex in western Pennsylvania.

The restoration done here at the Darwin Martin House was amazing. It was interesting to learn about the relationship between Wright and his patron and to see some of the evolution of his style from here circa 1903 to the later works I've seen from his career.

The standard tour we took was great. There are options for those interested in diving even deeper. I'd definitely recommend checking this out if you're in Buffalo.

The Frank Lloyd Wright Building Conservancy annual conference was held in Buffalo this year, so the site was closed to public tours on Saturday the 16th. We hope we can welcome you back to the Martin House again!

Diverse architecture, great tour!
Sep. 2021
This was the first time I've toured a Frank Lloyd Wright house, and I think it was a great place to start! We learned so much about Frank Lloyd Wright himself, and his business relationship and friendship with Darwin Martin. I'm not a huge architecture buff, but I am much more interested in it after this tour, and think it'd be fun to tour all of the Frank Lloyd Wright buildings in the Buffalo region - we learned about so many on the tour of the Martin House and compound. I'd highly recommend for some fun history and beautiful houses and grounds. Very cool to see 3 different styles/price points in the 3 houses on the compound. I actually preferred the less grand stylings of the Gardener's house and the Barton house!

We all love the Barton House and Gardener's Cottage, and many visitors comment about imagining themselves living in one of these two homes. Thank you for the kind review, and we hope your exploration of Wright homes continues!

Frank Lloyd Wright's houses aren't liked by everyone, but still they are interesting to visit. The Martin house and the other two houses on this acreage are worth seeing to observe several of Wright's concepts in architectural design. Take the two hour tour to see all the details of these houses. If you are fortunate, you will get an excellent tour guide who can explain the concepts without being too verbose.

It was an experience!

My first visit to a FLW house. The house was more than a bit over the top for me but it was interesting learning about the man and his obsessions when he built it. Interesting backstory and the guide will share it all with you.

Thanks for the review, and we are happy you enjoyed your visit. We love our Martin House, but many visitors can better imagine living in the Barton House or Gardener's Cottage, which are more modest but still stunning. Thank you again for sharing your experience.

$25/person for walking around the 1st floor?
Oct. 2021 • Couples
It was not clear during the booking time that the 1-hr tours were the 1st floor only. There was no 2-hr tours offered neither. The experience was extremely limited.

We are a little confused about your review. The one-hour tour was changed to a 75-minute tour for 2021 and includes the 2nd floor as well as the pergola, conservatory and carriage house. Additionally, the cost of the 75-minute tour is $22 for adults with discounts for other groups. The tour is also docent led, so you would not have just been "walking around." We do offer 2-hours tours, our Martin House Plus tour, which takes visitors to the other residences on the estate. The self-guided tour does not include the 2nd floor and is only offered on select Thursday evenings. The cost of this experience is $15 for adult and free for members and children 8 and under. Please email info@martinhouse.org with any additional questions. If you want to see the areas explored on each tour offering, you can find details at martinhouse.org/tour.

Excellent docent led tour of an iconic Frank Lloyd Wright design. The grounds were beautifully planted. Our guide was very informative. The gift shop has many lovely items. You can get there with public transportation. A must see in Buffalo.
