Best example of Nature and Tlingit History in Sitka!
Sitka National Historical Park is also a museum with random historic totem poles of the Tlingit people along the forest path. We were on a private tour but you can easily do this in your own. The park is a short walk from the Raptor Rehab Center. Start on the park path off Sawmill Creek Road and walk thru a peaceful environment filled with thriving trees, the babbling brook that leads out to crescent bay and the museum. Take in the majestic beauty of the greenery, moss, waters and tall trees! See many historic totem poles and end your journey at the museum. Totem poles tell the histories of Tlingit families that are centuries old. The museum is steeped in explaining the rich history of the Tlingit people’s livelihoods in the Sitka area and beyond!

    Beautiful
Absolutely loved the totem poles! The walk was easy and the path nice and clear with many benches😀 The woods at times look like something from a jurassic Park movie😮 I was waiting for a dinosaur 🦖 to come out of the woods and eat me😮 Saw a bald eagle 🦅 fly over our heads while walking😀 Nice short movie on the history of the park in the theatre. Easy walking distance from downtown and AWESOME path leads you all the way there😀 No gift shop, a major loss for raising money for the park system☹️ Every park should have a gift shop with profits going back to that park for improvements🤫 What a waste on not having a vision Sean Sullivan, typical government leadership☹️

    National Park - good trails
National park. Didn’t require entry fee or pass. Inside museum and video if you need a break from the elements. This has a few hiking paths so you could spend about 2-3 hours if you are hiking and reading materials. We came upon a trail entrance off Sawmill creek Road — walked about 100 yards to reach the visitor center. If driving enter at Lincoln Street.

    Very interesting
There is a very nice little museum, walking trails and a totem pole exhibit. It's about a 20-30 easy walk from the historic part of Sitka but is worth the visit. And, since it's a national park, you can get a park stamp if you collect those.

    Annual Cruise
Spent about and hour and half at the park. We were fortunate to meet a member of the Tlingit peoples who was telling stories and answering questions about their history and culture. Also he gave a demonstration of their carving g artistry. Many trails to explore. Well worth the stop. There is a trail from town to walk to the park or you can hire a taxi.

    Highlight of Sitka
This national park was the highlight of Sitka. The outdoor space is a beautiful walk with lots of animals sightings along the way. The original totem poles are inside for viewing. Easy walk from downtown and quite enjoyable.

    Highlight Experience in Sitka
This was overall a great experience; the highlight of Sitka, in our opinion. From the Convention Center where we were dropped off in town, the walk to the National Park revealed many discoveries along the way. At Crescent Harbor we witnessed numerous people pulling salmon in off their fishing lines. Keep your eyes open for eagles and other wildlife, which we were blessed to view. Once in the park, you will encounter totem poles at the start of your walk, along a path that loops through the lush forest. It was a lovely and easy walk for my 75 year old husband. Our visit to the National Park and the walk there and back gave us a true glimpse of Alaska’s majesty and beauty.

    Best of Sitka tour stop
Plenty of trails and totems to see. Probably could spend an hour or so but was able to complete it in 40 minutes with our rushing. Part of a 3 part best of Sitka tour. Worth a stop if in Sitka and you don’t have an official excursion. Piece and nice views of coastline/Bay Area. Plenty of parking and not too far from town.

    Nature at it's best!
Sitka National Historic Park/Totem park is a beautiful walk is the woods. Free Shuttle bus from the cruise port puts you right down the street from the entrance to the park. Beautiful views, interesting totem poles, and wildlife. We saw salmon jumping out of the water and bald eagles. There is a visitors center with nice restrooms. The park is free so we did not book an excursion. Afterwards, we went into town and ate some fresh fish and chips from a food truck...excellent. The Russian church closed at 2pm so we only got to see the outside. Rode the shuttle back to the cruise ship. Wonderful!

Enjoyable walk in the woods right in town!
Great park to walk through and enjoy nature right in town. Walked through here several mornings and it was always so peaceful. Plenty of bald eagles, ravens, etc. to see but didn't see bears. Used a lot by locals so it always seemed someone would be around for help if you needed it. Great place to go for an easy stroll.

Smaller than I thought, but very interesting and educational stop. I hiked here from port. It is a beautiful walk on mostly sidewalk. You will walk along the bay, past a playground, small marina where you may see a seal and eagles. I did. Try to keep conversation to a minimum and your eyes on the trees for eagles. If you continue to hike, through the forest beyond the center and turn left after the forest walk, you can get to the raptor place. I would recommend this walk for travelers keeping to budget or trying to avoid crowds instead of a tour that wastes a lot of time. On the walk back, there is a tiny church to pop in and thank the Lord you didn't get eaten by a bear. :)

What a great activity to do while you're in town. With free admission, it is fun for the whole family and will occupy a significant amount of time. From the video that they play on demand when it isn't crowded or on a schedule when crowded, to the carving hut behind with a native Alaskan carving master, Tommy, to the totem trail rich in history and free guided tour thru the NPS app, and the exhibits inside, this place is worth the visit. The walk through the woods is very mild and easy for all ages, with practically zero elevation.

Sitka National Historic Park (free entry) is just a 13-minute walk from Harrigan Centennial Hall in town and is easily paired with a visit to the Alaska Raptor Center. The park was created in 1910 to commemorate the 1804 battle between the native Tlingit and the Russians who had established a post for fur trading in Ketchikan. Totem Trail leaves from the Visitor Center, passing replicas of 20 totem poles on a relaxing walk around this peninsula. If you’re lucky, you may even be able to watch Tlingit Master Carver Tommy Joseph carving a totem pole.

We walked on a nice side walk from downtown. It took about 15-20 minutes. We passed the Sitka Sound Science Center on the way. Beside the building, we could see salmon jumping in the water. There are several places for great pictures. Once we arrive dat the park, we viewed a short movie about the history of the area (about 10 minutes). There is no charge to get into the park or watch the movie. Asked the ranger about tickets as they are limiting viewing with COVID. We spent about an hour walking on the well marked trail. Multiple totem poles are placed along the paths. We walked along the river and saw so many salmon spawning. It was amazing to see so many in one place. Several of the trails were closed while we were there due to bear activity, but we did not see any bears while hiking. One trail goes to the Sitka Highway. The Raptor center is only about a 10 minute walk from there.

Amazing what the state has done, the trails are well kept, I would have appreciated a few more signs or arrows as my husband & I got turned around, then we were concerned we'd miss the tour bus. Standing on the bridge watching the salmon was interesting, surreal & tugged a bit on my heart strings. I realize that the salmon laying their eggs then dying is part of their life cycle, but it still sad to me. I've never seen so many fish with the same mission in one place.
The totems were very interesting and each one told a story. I might have been nice to have some signage with that information.
I don't recommend this for anyone that has difficulty walking unless they have a wheelchair.

There is just something so special about the Totem Park- maybe its the eagles everywhere or the ravens flying and talking above, possibly the Totem Poles themselves? Beautiful trail along the water with places to sit and rest and take it all in along the way. We were in Sitka for 3 days and each day i felt the draw to walk through the park!

This was an excursion from an Alaskan Cruise. Our group enjoyed a leisurely hike a through the area with many sitings of eagles and their habitats. Our guide, Sammie, was great; she provided information and history in an enjoyable but thorough manner. The totem poles, often isolated, with her insights into their meanings, were a must see. This site could not be fully enjoyed one's own.

This was a cruise excursion, and sometimes, cruise excursions can disappoint, but this one did not at all. The visitor center is tastefully curated, and they show a short movie that showcases the history of the indigenous people, as well as explains the history of how westerners arrived. We got to see someone actually carving a totem pole, which was fascinating and moving.
