We walked the entire length, but found most shops to have severely overpriced art with rather snooty shop keepers. However, we did find a great Thai restaurant near the upper end of Canyon Road. It is not worth the walk.

You just walk from gallery to gallery looking at unaffordable pieces of art. The best were the ones with outdoor displays and sculptures.
Good place for a long walk. Since it is well known it was worth the visit to satisfy our curiosity.

We walked along much of Canyon Road during our self-guided walk of downtown Santa Fe. The road was pretty quiet on a Monday afternoon in October; some galleries were open but others were closed thanks to Covid. We appreciated seeing some of the outdoor art installations, but overall we are not big art aficionados so we didn't take more time to stop and browse. Others who are serious shoppers could I'm sure spend much more time there, but we spent about 30 minutes strolling the road and a couple others nearby and found that to be plenty of time.

We love Santa Fe and Canyon Road in particular. Though difficult to navigate and park, walking from gallery to gallery is a treat. Artists generally are in residence and you can discuss their work with them. Prices can range from a few hundred to several thousand dollars for artwork but you are guaranteed to find an original piece that can fit your budget. There are also a few restaurants and tea shops for a bite or drink.

Yes, it’s filled with artists of varying degrees of resources and talents but it’s also a BEAUTIFUL area to just wander through for the gardens. Just a lovely place to wander around in. Parking’s not easy unless you get there early-ish. We got there about 10:30 and found ample parking on the street. Then we started ambling along and it was wonderful. We found the shopkeepers/artists to be friendly and welcoming and their wares both interesting and pricey. Definitely worth a look though. Especially to wander through their outdoor spaces.

There is a lot to take in so give yourself plenty of time. We found the proprietors and staff people at every stop to be willing to take the time to educate us about the artist and the art. The road gains elevation and is a decent length so wear your walking shoes or rent a bike. Food choices are pretty limited but the Tea House near the top provides a good place to chill and refuel.

I always take an evening walk on Canyon road just to view the wonderful sculptures. There is a pay to park area. I walked to the end and discovered a couple of galleries that blew my mind with their windmills, stone furniture and my favorite, chunks of opalized petrified wood. Beautiful works of art for the eyes to feast on in gallery yards. Some whimsical some downright mesmerizing. If you have a free evening and want a great casual stroll, I recommend Canyon Road

If you want to see art of all kinds, bronze statues and store after store of beautiful galleries and unique buildings as well as restaurants and cafes this is a place to go. There are several parking lots but be prepared to walk. The multiple galleries can be overwhelming but the work is amazing! In the summer months and fall I understand this road is very very busy.

The #3 art district in the U.S. behind New York City & LA. Plus, Santa Fe is America's oldest state capitol. So the galleries are housed in historical pueblo buildings along a narrow street that also includes outdoor art. Such a cool, authentic setting for all that incredible art! Definitely not a Rodeo Drive shopping spree experience! You'll see amazing works that may have taken an artist a year or more to complete. Sometimes quite passionate, the gallery people are engaging even when they know most of us can't afford to make purchases. Walk thru galleries, then have lunch at the Tea House or margaritas at El Farol, then walk thru more galleries. Besides Canyon Rd. the side streets also have galleries. So pace yourself, you'll need all day to get through every shop.

I don't remember public restrooms, but I think the individual stores had restrooms. it wasn't a problem.

Why, yes you can if you are able and would like to take in all the trees and sights along the way... If you are lucky and find a parking spot along the road, you will probably have to do some walking anyway!!! Lots of opportunities along the area!!!

I don't think all of the museums and attractions would be closed on Monday. I would check, as suggested, on the chamber website.
When we walk the road, we often just enjoy the outdoor sculptures and flower gardens. There are also stores and restaurants.

Hello!
I was wondering if you could tell me about parking near the Canyon Rd. galleries? I have read that their is parking at either end. We have a small motorhome and hoping to be able to park in somewhere nearby.
Thanks for any advice you might provide.

Parking is limited. I would advise you get there really early for the best spot. We were within walking distance of our suite so we did not have to address the parking issue. The city also has a shuttle service & UBER is operating as well. Have fun!!

Is Canyon Road easily experienced on my own, or do I need a tour guide?

Hi Pam! Great question. While a guide is not necessary to visit Canyon Road, a tour can offer insight and a nuanced (and fun!) experience of the area and of the artwork on view.
Some folks find it helpful to take a tour first and then continue exploring on their own.
I own Santa Fe Art Tours in addition to helping out with answers here, and we created a “Discover Canyon Road” to give folks an awesome Canyon Road experience. You can actually book it right here on TripAdvisor. I hope that helps!

Street parking along Canyon Road is free, but it can be tricky during busy times. Parking along Alameda Street, which runs parallel to Canyon Road, is also free. There is a small, free parking lot at the beginning of Canyon Road, as well.

Did you see dogs walking their owners:) we'd like to meander, but have our furry friend.

People were walking dogs everywhere there. Well behaved dogs were allowed in some restaurants

Is there a close car rental company? I'm thinking we'd take the shuttle to the hotel for the first few days then rent a car for the second half of our trip. Thank you.
Written 9 January 2017
We always rent at the airport, but check Santa Fe car rental. It is the state capitol so I wouldn't be surprised if you'd find a rental company. Or, you might even ask at your hotel. Might there be a zip car? Again, ask your hotel. ENJOY
