Lots of picnic tables available for tailgating if your traveling and can’t bring your own chairs. We went 3 nights and loved each one.Visited August 2024Travelled with familyWritten 11 August 2024

We got 3rd row tickets for "Apprentice Scenes", a selection of scenes from various operas performed by opera apprentices. While parking initially seemed like a nightmare, it was done efficiently and we had a short walk to the opera house. There was a shuttle available with no line, but we opted to hoof it on our own. We did take the shuttle back to the parking lot, which got us out of the traffic quickly. The show was fun, the audience was enthusiastic, and we had a fantastic time!Visited August 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 12 August 2024
- Dolores PBaltimore, Maryland47 contributionsA Night at the OperaI am an opera buff and no trip to Santa Fe in the summer is complete without a visit to the opera house. The performances are wonderful. The setting is unbelievably beautiful, with the sun setting behind the stage. Even my husband, who is not the fan of opera that I am, enjoys the experience. Besides attending the performance, many tail gate or bring a picnic to enjoy before the performance. It is also possible to attend a dinner with a pre-performance lecture. Everything is focused on making the evening an enjoyable one.Visited August 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 24 August 2024

If possible attend one of the opera which are world renown quality in production and singers. Beautiful building with view of the mountains. At night during performances, we often saw spectacular lightning in the far distance from thunderstorms on far away mountain. Spectacular.Visited August 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 26 August 2024

To begin, it was wonderful being in the “City Different”. Santa Fe is magical. The opera house is a splendid, partially open air facility that offers fantastic views of a southwest sunset just before curtain.
Their orchestra is world class and last night’s conductor did a great job. The villain in Tosca, Scarpia, was played by a fine baritone who did justice to the role. My favorite line comes from him to conclude the first act, when he bellows: “Tosca you make me forget god!”.
I have always believed that sets, lighting, etc. are there to enhance the performance. If one needs to pay attention to these accessories, it’s a problem. It was certainly a problem for this performance. Further, Tosca may be Puccini’s finest work and perhaps one of the best classical Italian operas ever written.
This production decided to “improve” it by bringing it into present day (an electric floor scrubber, men in contemporary suits and ties, etc.) And then there’s the matter of Tosca, a diva, confronting the big brute Scarpia and, instead of stabbing him (as written), she strangles him, after which proclaiming “there is blood on my hands (as written), but now it makes no sense.
There’s a very famous and highly anticipated aria towards the end of the second act which the soprano handled very nicely. Where was she for the rest of the performance? And the tenor, while of good voice, was rather lazy, only reaching his potential in some of the more soaring portions of a few arias.
Oh and instead of tossing herself off the parapet to end the show, this performance raises a ghostlike double who moves slowly off stage while the orchestra swells. Why?
Okay and all that said, it was great to be there. We sat and watched the sun set as a cool breeze wafted through the auditorium and the orchestra thoroughly entertained. It could have been a much better show but first and foremost, opera is about the music since most of the stories are preposterous anyway! And Tosca is truly a musical masterpiece.

Opera House Fantastic, the performance so so. The Marriage of Figaro was a lackluster recital. Performers were lethargic, repetitive, the set design was confusing, boring, and brought a starkness to the entire enactment of the great work. This is the first time I have been disappointed in an opera at the Santa Fe Opera House and hope my future experiences are in line with past ones.

The opera was very entertaining. The parking is well organized and easy to get in and out when the opera is over. The opera house is beautiful. We had seats far up and therefore had some difficulty seeing the faces of the performers, even with binoculars. You are seated close together with other patrons. Restrooms are on easily available. Concessions are on the second level as well as the first.

This opera is magical! It starts with a lecture by a funny lecturer about the opera one is about to see. This is a not to be missed event. Then, for those who planned it, a "tail gate party" in the parking lot. Most people have this as a quite formal event, with candelabras and table cloths on the tables. Then the opera itself is wonderful, with being part outdoor with a view of the mountains in the background. The facility attracts top notch singers and the orchestra is always great. We live in Santa Fe, and go every year! Not to be missed!

Open air seating but roof covers, food and drink options, lovely gift shop. Best singers come to perform favorites in new settings and new and scarce operas. 4 miles out of Santa Fe proper.

The Santa Fe Opera House is a spectacular setting. Watching the opera while seeing the sun set behind is fabulous. The sound quality is amazing for an open air theater. The pre opera talk was great though the meal was a bit pricey. Nonetheless, we were so glad we attended. The parking lot was filled with over the top picnicking with fine crystal and silverware. Santa Fe knows how to attend an opera and make it fun!

Came here is July while visiting my brother and sister in law. We saw The Flying Dutchman. You can come in anything from nice jeans to a tuxedo! I recommend packing a nice picnic and some wine, a table and folding chairs and tailgate your dinner in the parking lot. Almost everyone else was! Allow an hour for dinner and plan to go in about 40 minutes before the show to get a cocktail and people watch. The show itself was amazing - the singers were incredible and the orchestra was fantastic. The stage is open, allowing you to see the sunset and the mountains- amazing. I am not sure there is a bad seat in the house. I also liked that there is a small screen in front of each seat showing a translation of the words - easy to ignore if you want, but helpful if you need it. A truly awesome experience

what time does the parking lot open today
Written 11 September 2024
I’ve seen several comments on lengthy times to leave the parking lots at the end of a performance. If I take the shuttle that leaves from town (La Fonda), is the shuttle stuck in the same parking lot jam or do they have different access/exit points? Trying to determine if we should just drive or shuttle in. Thanks.

We will be in Santa Fe on Sat. Sept. 25th. Are you offering backstage touts of the Opera House on that day?

A friend and I are going to an opera for the first time, but we don’t have cars to get there. We were thinking of taking the shuttle but we’re from Albuquerque, which is 40$ for a round trip, and we want to save as much as possible for dinner. Another friend suggested taking the train and getting an Uber to the opera, but we don’t know how late the train runs; Our opera is at 8:30. We can’t get a hotel because we have a wedding the next day that was sprung on last minute. Are there any suggestions for transportation?

I’d call the opera house office. My guess is that they will be able to help you.

If you plan to rent a car from the airport please arrange this in advance. To my knowledge there isn't a car rental office at the airport.

Where are the best places to sit without breaking the bank?
Written 18 March 2018
The above-respondents have accurately stated the issue. I've been going to Santa Fe Opera and STARTED 30 years ago with seats @ $20.00 -- now, I'm buying $180.- $200.00 seats; my point is that YOU will enjoy whatever your pocket book allows. ALL THE SEATS have great sight lines and lovely sound. THIS CANNOT BE SAID FOR MANY EUROPEAN OPERA HOUSES!
