Phillips House is the only home on historic Chestnut Street open to the public, and it provides a glimpse into the private world of the Phillips family during the early decades of the twentieth century. The kitchen, pantry, and a domestic staff bedroom, present a rarely seen picture of how the great houses functioned as new technologies were being introduced.

We so enjoyed our tour of this beautiful mansion. Our young tour guide was great-very knowledgeable about the history of the mansion and the family that had lived there as well as the customs and habits of the times. We wore booties over our shoes so were allowed to walk anywhere in a room (no touching) enabling us to look... More

A phenomenal and informative tour of the illustrious history Phillips House! The tour guide was very personable and answered all of our questions. We were practically taken back in time as he described some very exciting events that took place in the house. The house is very beautiful and 5 generations of the family's belongings are kept there in perfect... More

We stumbled upon this very large mansion. We had visited Newport and often come across historical homes in various parts of the state. However, this Federal Style mansion is on this wide boulevard with other Federal style mansions. It is like a scene from a movie when we walk down this street. When you come upon #2 Chestnut, you can't... More

This endowed historic home is a gem on Chestnut Street. Admission is free and the guides very informed on the period. A great example of family life for people of privilege and their help.

Lovely house, great to learn about the history of the place and get a glimpse of the past. The guide and staff were great! Make sure you see the old cars in the garage too!

What luck! We loved finding one of the historical homes on Chestnut St. open to the public for viewing. The home retains most of the original furniture, decorative items, china, art, etc. so we can all see how the Phillips family actually lived. It also has the original carriage house with the family automobiles and carriages. A beautiful historic home... More

I loved this place. Simply magnificent. The architecture and the furniture. Tour guide was good to. Easy to get to, you can park on Chestnut Street and give yourself time to walk up and down the street, gawking at the old houses, peaking in yards (of course many are private property). Old brick sidewalks, floral gardens, beautiful yards everywhere. I... More

Beautiful architecture and period furnishings. Tour was interesting and I saw some things I'd never seen before - an antique egg carton (rare) and one of the most beautiful ice boxes ever!! The fireplaces were pretty and some unique antiques (wind-up phonograph, recliner, etc). Well worth the minimal entry fee.

Perfectly preserved 1830 s house. I would have enjoyed the house if I toured by myself the museum only allows you to go with a guide. Bob our guide made what would have been a nice visit into a terrific one. He brought the place alive for us. He's a great story teller, has an excellent sense of humor and... More
