History & Hauntings of Salem Guided Walking Tour

945 reviews
There are many Salem tours out there but few are as compelling as this one, led by a local historian who brings alive the city's history at the time of day you choose. If you enjoy being scared, pick a nighttime tour led by lantern light. Visit the Burying Point, as well as modern-day practicing witches as your guide tells stories of the haunted history of Salem, Massachusetts.

This site is two part. The first is a theatrical reenactment of a witch trial, performed by energetic and enthusiastic staff. Staff was very knowledgeable, engaging and passionate on the subject. Afterwards, you are led downstairs to a recreated dungeon. There is a sample street to show 17th century Salem, and different prison cells of sizes and torture devices built to time-specific dimensions. It is moving, though the mannequins take away from this somewhat. All-in-all, the staff was great and it gave strong perspective on the suffering of the victims. Your session ends in a very affordable gift shop.

We enjoyed the reenactment. Very small. It was interesting to see an original beam from the real dungeons.

Stopped by on a rainy Wednesday afternoon. This is an odd sort of attraction. They run "shows" every 45 minutes or so and if you show up at an odd time you remain in the super small gift shop to wait. Our time was upon us and we were free to sit in a socially distanced auditorium. And the show begins. The actors reenact some Salem Witch Trial stuff as a speaker gives you some information between "acts". This wasn't really a problem, but the speaker remarking about having to take that job for a paycheck in the middle of her speech was odd, humiliating, and wrong to do. The second tour is in the dungeon where you see some Witch Trial artifacts and cells. If someone put a little imagination and money into this place it could be a really, really successful attraction; especially that second portion of the tour. It needs an updating or something better in the worst way. But the tour is so short overall, maybe twenty minutes at the absolute most? Should have been way longer.

The re-enactment taught about the history of the trials. It was short and concise. The actors were enthusiastic and knowledgeable, keeping us intrigued. This was not on our list of things to do but we stumbled across it by accident and are so glad we did!

You get to see a reenactment and also see replicas of the original cells and space of the cells where people accused of witchcraft were being kept.
