Scenery changes from desert to mountain pine in 25 minutes. Beautiful drive and recommend it to anyone wanting something out of the oridinary so close to Tucson. Also visit the USA 's most southern ski lift at the top.

Gates pass is probably the best place to catch the sunset in the Tucson area. Can be crowded around that time.

As a cyclist, this route is very popular for us, we like the rolling hills and the steep incline up the back of Gates. But it is one horrendous road for being bumpy. Its not too long and you see a a lot.

Gates pass is a short passage through the mountains with an easy turnoff. Paths depart from the parking area. The area is flanked by a state park so the cacti and vegetation are lush and undisturbed. The road becomes narrow and twisting for about a...More

All above are true. There is a couple of parking lots off the road and a covered viewing area but no picnic facilities, no grills or bathrooms. Just parking and trails.

You can stay in the parking lot and see the sunset or go to a paved overlook area right next to the lot.
