I saw this on 26NOV and didn't walk out, from the 2nd row, out of respect for the institution and the actors. If Trinity Rep wants to perform a WOKE representation of an honored tradition, that's their right, but it should be called "A Woke Christmas Carol", else its false advertising. Inclusion also means being inclusive of time-honored traditions. Imagine buying an authentic Coach handbag for your wife for a high dollar value only to find its a knock-off.

Both Scrooge and Marley were women. Scrooge's nephew was gay with partner. Past ghost was a flamboyant 1960s fighter pilot. Present and future ghosts were nowhere near the story. No staging for period. Everything was just wrong. It was also made into a strange comedy. Heavy Spanish influence and story in Spanish.

It was just bad. Final scene was out of the modern era with plastic cups, water bottles and Chinese takeout. Very very odd.

We spent a lot of money to treat ourselves for a single play during the Christmas season, trusting a professional institution, and we were clearly misled. Shame on us perhaps.

Very disappointed with this version of A Christmas Carol. One or two changes to the original story for modernization or inclusion sake might be tolerable ( though not necessary) but the over- the - top amount of changes created nothing more than a woke production that overshadowed the true meaning of the Dickens story. It was as if someone took the time honored work of a literary genius and tried to see just how much they could screw it up and still get people to come and watch. This production should be performed under a different title so patrons know they are not seeing the classic but a comical, drab and needlessly confused version of it. This will be my last time attending A Christmas Carol at Trinity Rep. There are much better productions out there- North Shore Music Theatre (their production was excellent this year), Hanover Theatre in Worcester and even the Stadium Theatre in Woonsocket ( which offers a great play at the fraction of Trinity Reps price). Just a reminder: there is no need to try and improve upon a great classic, your audience is intelligent enough to transfer the message of the play to their modern life without your “help”.

Like many of the other recent negative reviews, my family too has a 20+ year tradition of attending the show. We would have a group of 25-30 family and friends attend each year and buy tickets as soon as they were released in the summer. Some years were certainly better than others....mostly in terms of set design or music etc. We never had an issue with the gender or race blind casting and the director would always add some modern messaging or twists to the otherwise traditional telling of the story.
The 2022 production was just so mind-numbingly bad. Dreary stage, uninspired costumes, and over the top/disjointed social messaging (I don't care for the term "woke"). My sense is that the actors did the best job they could with what was given to them....I would save most of my criticism for the Director/Creative Director here. This was a second rate college level production. Trinity Rep tries to rationalize this by calling their version of a Christmas Carol "Reimagined". If this is the direction they wanted to take the show, they should not also claim it as a "beloved family tradition".
Perhaps the greatest turnoff to the Trinity Rep is their "open letter" to a 2021 review from the Providence Journal. You can google it.
For this years upcoming show, I plan to attend an early performance by myself in hopes that they have bounced back from their bout of mediocrity. If the show is halfway decent, we will attend again as a larger group after Thanksgiving. If it remains on the same path as previous years, we will take our money and patronage to another production.

“Terribly disappointed” would be an understatement to refer to this year’s production of “A Christmas Carol” by Charles Dickens. A previous reviewer here hit the nail on the head - it’s a woke production, and I feel cheated out of my traditional Christmas performance.

No knocking the acting here, all performers were very talented. I’m referring to the fact that Trinity Rep is billing this as THE Charles Dickens’ story and it’s absolutely outlandish. The artistic liberties taken went way too far. The set and costumes were depressing.

Had Trinity Rep wanted to create their own spin off of this traditional tale, then by all means, go for it … but do not trick us into thinking this is THE Charles Dickens’ story.

So sad that such a beautiful story was changed to fit the director’s views and beliefs.

The worst possible experience this past Friday at Trinity Rep. The employees spent a majority of their time discussing pay inequities while I was waiting to be brought in, I understand pay is a concern for individuals, but I’m coming to see a show not hear employees complain before I get to my seat. Then when I do get to my seat the show was horrible. From door-to-door worst experience I’ve had in years. I would rather be locked back in the house with COVID restrictions then come back to Trinity Rep.

Went to see A Christmas Carol - fantastic show! Being a musical, it doesn’t follow the regular script - it was great! I loved the engagement with the actors and audience. From the moment we walked in, everyone was very attentive and helpful. One in our party had to use the elevator and they were very accommodating. Would highly recommend to anyone looking for a great night out - couples, friends, families with kids. Everyone will enjoy it.

PLEASE bring back the traditional Christmas Carol! The Charles Dickens story that we all know and love. Or, as someone stated in another review …change the name so you don’t disappoint those of us that paid a hefty sum to go see the beautiful old fashioned version !
My husband and I have been attending for many years and have never been so let down. Truly disappointing.

This was by far.... and I mean BY FAR... the worst of the worst Christmas Carol shows I have ever seen in my life. For any critic to say this was anything but awful means that they should never ever be a critic. Trinity Rep is one of my favorite places to go and the place is fantastic BUT they should be utterly ashamed to have presented this "version" of a holiday classic. I'm understanding of a few twists but this was completely confusing. Coal Miners? The ghost Christmas Present in a drag queen wig and 70's leggings? The acting was beyond terrible and at times truly laughable. I KNOW I'm not alone when I say people were so disappointed just by how many people didn't clap or stand at the (very thankful) end of the show. I've been going to this show for past 15 years and it has always been the one thing that really vaults you into the spirit of Christmas and this did nothing but frustrate me. Shameful and Embarrassing.

Trinity Repertory Company, A Christmas Carol, was our most treasured tradition. We attended the show every year with front row seats.
We attended the show Nov, 2022 and was shocked and heartbroken with the non traditional political statement. This director has destroyed a treasured show for the purpose of pushing an agenda. The set lacked traditional features and was dull and boring. The costumes that were once beautiful, were lackluster or non existent.
Please bring our traditional Christmas Carol back or change the name because what my family endured was not the beautiful show we grew to love. Charles Dickens would be horrified!

We have been going to Trinity Rep's Christmas Carol productions for the past 20 years. We go each year as a group of 10. Naturally, some shows are better than others, but all have always touched our hearts or moved us. All shows have had beautiful sets, and all have reflected the beauty of Charles Dicken's work. This year had almost no backgound set, but worse than that, we wondered if we were watching "The Christmas Carol" or another show altogether. We respect artistic license, but when a production does not at all represent the original story, and only seems to have a political agenda, it is offensive. This is the first time, none of us enjoyed or were moved by Trinity's performance. We all agreed the singing, and the music were superb, some of the acting was good, especially the acting of Scrooge, but the rewriting of the work, the absolute inaccuracy of roles fitting to the period of time the show was set in, and the obvious political agenda was offensive. Needless to say, we will not be back! Honestly, if Trinity wants to rewrite the original genius story of the Christmas Carol, so be it, but name it something else, and please let your patrons know ahead of time. We paid $65 a seat to see the Christmas Carol, and none of us quite can figure out what exactly we saw!
