While not always recommended in winter (and def. not during "Frozen Dead Guy" in Nederland), this is by far my fav way to get from Metro Denver to Estes. Fall drive, while longer than the standard routes, is nothing short of spectacular.
This is really an amazing drive. If the scenery of the surrounding mountains and valleys isn't enough, the local wildlife is really special as well. With large animals like deer and elk visable from close up. I would recommend giving them plenty of room though....More
Very beautiful drive. I started in Estes Park and when I got to Black Hawk I was surprised to see there were so many casinos! What a neat town. I had my dogs with me so unfortunately I couldn’t go inside and explore everything I...More
The drive and the views from the peak were breathtaking. To enjoy the drive make sure you have a video camera as the trip is fairly long but you want to remember it all from the base to the peaks and back. There are multiple...More
Take you time driving these roads. Drink lots of water because you are going, up, Up, UP. Beautiful towns, shops and most of all....NATURE. The Rocky Mountains are gorgeous, and the people who live in and around the mountains, are wonderful people. Highly Recommend!

I'm not sure what will actually be available, but there may be some activities or areas that may be available in Rocky Mountain national Park . I would contact the park to see which areas or activities are possible.

Thank you everyone for your replies. We will visit Estes and start from there. I meant to post this on the Trail Ridge Road page, got a little mixed up! If we do go all the way to Grand Lake, would it be scenic to go South towards Berthoud Falls and then East toward Denver, or to just go back on the Trail Ridge Road and from there head to Boulder to see the Flat Irons? I generally don't like to take the same way back that I came from but don't know if there is anything worth seeing if I go south from Grand Lake.
