Spent two days and two nights in FJ. A lovely little township. Lots of eating places. Did the Roberts Track - see other review. The 4 square was such a good little shop, the sandwiches and pies were very nice. I did notice a lot of vines growing on all the trees on the main road. That was sad. Pity that cannot be sorted. But all in all a must visit destination.

Very sad how far this glacier has receded since we last visited 25 years ago. And with the flooding a few years back it is now not possible to get even remotely close to the face. The view from the current lookout was good though and the track to the lookout is accessible to a person in a wheelchair with some assistance (a few big uphills)

Walked up the track as far as possible to see the glacier. It's a pleasant walk with bush, streams and so on. The final viewing area is very good - it's possible to see much of the glacier even though it's evidently 2 km away. Signs warning not to go any further - you may be able to but only with professional guides. It had been raining heavily the day before and the river was well up - any slip into that and I would suspect the rescue teams would only be pulling out a body. Global warming is certainly reducing the size of the glacier but we got some great photos with clouds. sun and mist giving lots of different views. Definitely worth a look
