About
Lake Matheson is nestled in ancient forest and is famous for mirror views of Aoraki/Mount Cook and Mount Tasman. Its excellent reflecting properties are due to the dark brown colour of the water – the result of organic matter leached from the humus of the forest floor. Dawn and dusk are the best times to enjoy the reflections in the lake. Time: 1 hr 30 min return Getting there: Turn onto Cook Flat Road in the middle of Fox Glacier Weheka township. Travel 5 km along this road then turn right onto the side road to Lake Matheson.

    Beautiful reflections
The loop around the lake takes you through an ancient, wild forest on a gravel footpath. The full loop takes 1.5 h to complete, starting and ending at Cafe Matheson. There are 3 viewpoints, the first being Jetty Lookout 15min into the walk, if you go clockwise. We liked the view from Reflection Island best (45min, counter-clockwise)! We did this twice, at dusk and in the morning. Lots of ducks and geese on the lake, so the reflections are dependent on them as well, apart from the wind.

    Nice and easy trail
Pretty nice hike. Path is gravel and well marked. Quite a few viewing points. If it’s cloudy you won’t see the glacier or mount cook. Any bit of wind will the reflective effect to go away.

Nice walk! Even when the mountains are hidden in clouds
Nice scenic walk, lots of birds and plants. The view over the lake is great and the mountains and glacier in the back make it complete. Unfortunately the weather can vary and clouds and mist can limit the view on the mountains like it did for us. Still an enjoyable walk with much to experience.

A gentle walk in the forest
A great way to enjoy the New Zealand outdoors without breaking a sweat. Have lunch at the gift store/coffee shop and then spend two hours walking around the lake. Don't miss walking out on the pier (halfway around the lake) and read the Maori inscriptions regarding nature.

Very nice if the weather is good
Nice walk. For the view and the mirror function of the lake the weather needs to be good; no or not much clouds and not much wind are ideally. The view over the lake to the mountains is amazing. There is a nice picture frame near the cafe of the glacier and mountains. The walk is not directly next to the lake; not a permanent lake view. The path winds through the forest along the lake. It goes slightly up and down the whole walk. Some views are only reachable by stair.

Such lovely views and near a cafe
The walks are not very long and it is generally busy, but it’s definitely worth the trip especially in fox area. The views along the walk do get a bit repetitive but the lake is stunning, and even on a rainy day with overcast skies it looked so serene. Of course if it isn’t sunny you miss the reflection of the mountains in the water. There is a cafe right there near the carpark so perhaps plan to do lunch or breakfast along here too

Do try the Lake Matheson Walk!
Highly recommend this beautiful walk round the lake. It takes about one and a half hours to do it at a comfortable pace. It is undulating though, but it is doable for ambulatory people. A suspension bridge greets you as you begin the walk. Very well kept walkway throughout.

Agree With All 5 Star Reviews
Most reviews here are 5 star and I totally agree. Many also describe the walk as easy or gently sloping. I’d use slightly stronger adjectives. For us, some of the hills were a bit steeper, but I guess it’s all dependent on your definition of “easy.”

Lovely circular walk around the lake with distant views of the mountains
Sadly it was musty during our visit Di we couldn’t see Mount Cook or Mount Tasman or capture that elusive ‘mirror’ photo of them reflected in the lake. However it’s a nice walk around anyway. A bit up and down - takes about an hour. Great cafe and gift shop near the car park. Free parking and entry.
