Really? Flames continually burning in a forest for over 90 years - why doesn't it burn down? See for yourself the extraordinary sight of dancing flames, fed by a natural gas seep, surrounded by lush ferns and ancient beech trees. Have ‘billy tea’ and pancakes cooked over the flames. Half-day trip includes two hour guided walk, 4WD transport and a visit to a working deer farm in a beautiful valley full of oil prospecting history.

Small tour groups (5 or 6 people) ensure every body feels included. At no time did Steve, our guide and host, seem like he was reading from a script . He really knew what he was talking about. It was a lovely calm bush walk with a great surprise at the end. Met some lovely overseas tourists (I'm from Nelson)) Can't... More

We should pay people like you to come on our trips! You two were so enthusiastic and I'm sure the whole of Nelson will hear about our activity which is on their doorstep. Thanks. More

A litle trip in a landrover first and then a beautiful easy walk of about an hour to the flames. The guide explaned a lot about the surrounding nature and we had some great pancakes cooked up above the flames. We also got to see a white deer, which was very special.

Glad you enjoyed learning about the natural surroundings and just being out in the bush. Not everyone thinks the walk is easy, as you did, but most find it well worth the effort! More

The Natural Flames Experience was a great trip! Walking through authentic New Zealand beech forest to a unique site. The Natural Flames must be one of the best-kept secrets of the South Island! Our guide Steve took great care of us, made some delicious pancakes on the flames and gave us a lot of information about the nature and history... More

This was a side tour from our program and certainly worth the effort. Strange to see flames just burning from the soil. Great walk to the flames and our guide was very informative about various aspects of the local environment. Pancakes cooked over the flames was a unique touch. Sand flies were vicious when we were there so insect repellent... More

Awesome! Glad you had such a good time (apart from the sandfly bites!) They seem to bite when you are about to enter the bush, but once you're in the bush, and at the Flames, they aren't present, luckily. More

Approximately 4 hour tour in total starting with a great 4WD trip beside the Blackwater river, then an hours walk up to the flames & a treat to eat, with a brew of billy tea! Steve is a great guide, very knowledgeable & informative about the history of the area. Wonderful bush walk. Definitely recommend this trip especially with young... More

This was another highkight of our trip. We were picked up at 9.30 from Murchison and a short drive later arrived at our start of the walk. It was a nice warm day and cool in the shade of the forest, just right really. We would not call ourselves hickers, mbut do enjoy a walk, we are in our mid 60's... More

We really enjoyed the 4WD/bush walk with our guide Steve. Steve and his wife were kind enough to reschedule the trip from the morning (very, very wet!!) to the afternoon (only slightly wet!!) In fact the rain enhanced the experience with the moss covered forest floor beneath the beech trees quite incredible with the recent rain. We appreciated Steve'a knowledge... More

Thank you for your lovely review of the Flames trip. It's good to get out into nature, not worrying about a little bit of rain! Surreal is a good description of the strangeness of arriving to a campfire that is already burning. More

The tour was amazing from start to finish. Steve's knowledge and his willingness to share it and answer questions was wonderful. Our group of three were the only ones on the tour so we had the tour all to ourselves. The trek was of a moderate grade (for us 55+) with lots to see and marvel at. Steve made sure... More

Did the tour as part of a family group. Very Kiwi approach, no fuss, very friendly. Trip to start of walk was by Land Rover, good commentary along the way. Actual walk was not too demanding and plenty to catch the eye. Flames were very intriguing to say the least. What must the wildlife make of them in the middle... More
