About
Walk NZ’s longest swingbridge before taking part in a range of activities from high speed flying-fox rides and jet boating to more leisurely strolls along the Faultline loop walk to view some of the site’s fascinating geological and historical features. The loop walk, for instance, encompasses the famous White’s Creek Faultine, - epicentre of the 1929 Murchison earthquake, where the ground rose 4.5m (15ft), historical goldworkings and the chance to look for gold on the river banks. The flying fox is suitable for all ages whilst the jetboating is one of the best runs in NZ.

Our guide asked if we wanted to do a swing bridge - of course we did! The Buller Gorge was the one on the route we were taking, though he did inform us it is the only one in the country that he is aware of which charges. The fee gets you access to the swing bridge and trails on the other side. If you want to do the flying monkey (zip line) there are additional fees.

Due to the nature of the bridge, we opted to leave the kids with our guide (8 month old and 4 year old). We paid the fee and took the adventurous walk across. Yes it is safe, but that does not mean it is not exhilarating! Definitely not for the weak of heart. With the kids waiting (kids can go, we just opted to go without), we did not explore the trails or do the zip line. For the nominal fee, it was enjoyable and we are glad we did it.

Note: the staff were NOT friendly. We asked if we could see the bridge before paying just to have a better idea of what to expect. The answer - NO. Not even a friendly no - a rude, smug NO.

0 stars for people skills, 4 stars for fun!

We had booked to do the jet boat ride and as you had to cross the swing bridge to get to the platform, assumed this was included in the jet boat price. It wasn't but was 'thrown in' when we decided to also to the flying fox. Quite pricey but we did enjoy the walk over the bridge, the jet boat was the highlight, the flying fox was fun but quite short, maybe more than 1 ride for $20 would be better. Agree that the tracks could do with some upkeep and no much to see although was impressed with the River levels marked on one of the trees but again this could have been presented better. We were able to use out TOP10 Discount which took a few $$ off the price.

$10 to get in to walk across a very narrow swing bridge. It really is a bit of a tourist scam. I imagine bus loads of international tourists visiting here and spending a bit of cash (obviously not possible with COVID at the moment), but for your average kiwi traveller there are better options. There was jet boating and zip lines if you do want a bit of an adrenaline rush.

The walks were ok, but the walking tracks could be better signposted and maintained. It was disappointing to see a lot of litter around the grounds that really shouldn't have been there.

If you do pop down to the water, make sure you've got your insect repellant as there are a LOT of sandflies.

...and If you're travelling the West Coast, save your money and head to the Hokitika Gorge walk instead.

The bridge walks is a ‘must do’ if passing on the road to Westport. The bridge itself is some 20m above the raging Buller river and it seems to go on forever (in fact some 110m in length). It is fairly stable despite its length, but we crossed it on a quiet time when there were only a few people about - so not sharing the bridge with anyone else helped cope with the stress of the exercise . At $12.5 pp it is not cheap but worth the money, albeit you can come back across the gorge on a zip line at $40 pp (or even $70 for the swallow dive option!). So you pays yer money and takes yer choice! There is also a loop walk through the miners camp on the far side of the river, which shows to uplift of ground that took place at the last major earthquake - but that walk was closed the day we were there. So gird your loins and grit your teeth…. and enjoy a unique experience.

Called in while on a motorbike ride. Woman behind counter explained it was a 150m bridge and cost $10 to cross. I asked if I could step out onto the deck to see this wonderful bridge before I committed my $10. No, you have to pay to step through the door! Grumpy woman left the reception area so I popped out to look and next thing she’s in my face demanding $10 and grabbing my shoulder to escort me out! I asked her not to touch me and left. Never ever have I seen such a reaction. Relax lady, people might like to see what you’re selling and there’s no need for the heavy attitude. Lots of swing bridges in NZ and this one is nothing special, Hokitika Gorge is way better.

$24 to walk across a bridge, which had people crossing either side meaning you had to squeeze past. Walks took about 10 mins, and if you wanted to extend the walk, the path was completely unkept. Completely ridiculous price, so we regretted going.

If I could rate this a 0 out of 5 I would.
$12.50 just to walk across a swing bridge is disturbing and un heard of in New Zealand. Staff were abrupt and just wanted to empty your pockets. Such a shame that a beautiful place like this has been completely commercialised.

The misleading sign says Coffee here, but you need to pay the entrance fee to get a coffee even though you can see the counter from the entrance. Very unfriendly staff. The south island has 1000+ wonderful places, this is not one of them.

Visited this and decided I couldn’t do the crossing as I counted MORE THAN the allowed 15 people at a time on the bridge, including two terrified crying children with parents trying to return with them, causing some problems trying to squeeze past people coming in the opposite direction. No refund of my $10.
Husband decided to cross but had to come back at the half way point as a woman coming in the opposite direction was too terrified to try to squeeze past him. The bridge is so narrow - one way only - but has people coming in both directions.

We were driving from Westport to Blenheim and this was about 1 hour 15 minutes from Westport and a great stop it turned out to be. The swing bridge is the longest in NZ and you felt quite safe. It is very sturdy and has a great view as you cross over. Then did the loop track which was a nice walk around and took roughly 15 minutes and came back across on the comet line. It was a lot of fun. We were a group of four and they charged $25 for a stick with photos of comet line which was really good as it was for all of us and included pictures of birds and great photos of the swing bridge and area and well worth it. Really enjoyed it.
