Tour of the Clyde Dam - Another one of New Zealands best kept secrets we need to share
Definitely a must do. It's not until you are up on the Dam you fully realize the size of it. From the top are great views towards Lake Dunstan and Clyde. The Dam is so wide. We went deep inside the Dam standing inside the walls of the dam it was 5.5 meters between us and Lake Dunstan and we were 49 meters below the lake surface. Really hard to imagine. In the control room we talked to an expert operator and were shown how electricity is traded and also how lake levels are monitored. We had Russell as our tour guide. So informative and knowledgeable. Lucky to be the only two on the tour. Kim was great to deal with making the booking process easy. Also making sure we had all the information required before we went on the tour. Well organized and worth the $$$$

    Very good tour
Thanks to Kim for arranging; Russell was our guide. Russell is a wealth of information about the dam, and anything related to it. Just 2 of us on the tour so great opportunity for Q&A. Thanks to Fred & Neville in the Control Room - my husband loved the chat. Yes this is worthwhile if you’re visiting Clyde.

Fascinating tour right into the workings of the dam
This tour is fascinating, we would highly recommend it! Such a smoothly run operation. Kim was incredibly organised right from my first contact with her, through to arriving at Clyde and getting kitted out in high-vis vests and the pre-tour briefing. Russell, our guide, was a wealth of knowledge and passed on all kinds of facts about the area, the construction of the dam and the running of the operation. He was able to answer all our questions and kept us moving along, without rushing us. It was great going down to the control room where Steve and Cam answered our questions and then seeing the inner workings of the dam was fascinating for young and old. It was certainly one of the highlights of our trip.

    Inside a working dam
This tour was extremely informative and allowed us to get inside a working dam. The tour leader was very knowledgeable yet did not blind us with too many facts. As the tour is in late afternoon you do need to wear warm clothing The on duty staff member was also very informative and took time to explain his role. I can recommend this tour for adults wanting to know more about electricity production in New Zealand.

Having watched this huge dam being built is was super keen to go and see the turbine hall and the galleries inside the dam. My wife wasn’t keen but I reminded her how much she enjoyed the BMW factory in Munich. She agreed. She really enjoyed it. We saw the control room where the dams on the Clutha and the Hawea lake are controlled . We saw the electricity market in NZ running g live. The dam was as you’d expect . The engineering on the dam slip joint was awe inspiring considering its proximity to the alpine fault. Standing inside the turbine above the peloton was unexpected. Over all a good way to see a massive hydroelectric dam up close. Small group so really great, thanks Russell

Great tour to see behind the sences where your power comes from and what is involved in generating enough power for the demand. The guides are very knowledgeable about the history and the onsite staff are happy to explain the operation from the control room.

IN A WORD IT WAS “GREAT”. WE HAD THE ADVANTAGE OF TWO GUIDES, NEIL AND GREG, GREG HAVING DECADES OF EXPERIENCE WORKING AT THE DAM SO COULD ANSWER ANY QUESTIONS WE HAD NO MATTER HOW OBSCURE AND WE HAD LOTS OF QUESTIONS. THEIR ENTHUSIASM MATCHED OURS SO THE TOUR WAS MORE LIKE BEING WITH CLOSE COLLEAGUES THAN PEOPLE WE HAD NOT MET BEFORE.

THE BEST ASPECT OF THE TRIP WAS THE ACCESS WE HAD TO ALL ASPECTS OF THE DAM AND THE TURBINE HALL. WE COULD GET ALMOST WITHIN TOUCHING DISTANCE OF THE TURBINE ITSELF AND THE NOISE AND VIBRATION GIVES A FEELING OF THE POWER OF THE WATER BEHIND THE DAM WALL THAT CANNOT BE CONVEYED IN ANY OTHER WAY.

WE WALKED THROUGH THE GALLERIES INSIDE THE DAM AND LOOKED DOWN ON THE PENSTOCKS TO GET AN IDEA OF THE SCALE OF THE DAM.

WE TOOK SO MUCH LONGER THAN THE ALLOTTED TIME BUT NEIL AND GREG WERE VERY WILLING TO INDULGE OUR CURIOSITY AND WE ARE VERY GRATEFUL TO THEM FOR MAKING OUR TOUR VERY SPECIAL

Felt the Power! ⚡
All mighty Clutha River flows through the magnificent NZ largest gravity feed hydro-electric Dam.
My tour guide was very friendly and easy to talk to & so passionate about sharing his knowledge.
Felt so privileged to have exclusive access to explore the Clyde Dam, both inside and out.
It was absolutely amazing experience!
Even seeing inside a working generator (Turbine Shaft) & talking to the expert operators in the control room was a highlight as well.
Definitely 100% worth it!!
