We arrived late afternoon and wanted to do a walk before it got dark. It was rainy and misty but the path is clearly marked and we had a lot of fun even though the weather was bad. Good walk and a decent level of...More

My husband and I did this with our 7 month old in the hiking backpack. We really enjoyed the walk up the mountain! Some bits got a bit steep and worked the calves but the view at the top is worth it. We actually continued...More

From the description on the DOC website, this sounded like an easy walk. It isn't! The walk is pretty steep, and the over 60's were struggling a bit with the walk up. Nice views though. Just expect to take longer than indicated on the sign....More

Easy way to take in the surrounds and mountains if you're short on time. You can continue up the ridge a bit more for slightly more view of Ruapehu

Best walk ever up behind The Chateau Tongariro. Twenty minutes up a gentle track with panoramic views out to the east north and west.

Nice short walk from Whakapapa village especially to catch a great sun rise or sunset. Prepare for all weathers, it is on an exposed ridge.
