Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

In the hope that we could explore what we were told was a lovely scenic beachside locale. The whole messaging around the town is that the residents don’t want us. You have to park out of the town, and walk in ( or buy a bus ticket) lest you have your car towed… and the cave walk is closed due to dangerous conditions- the remaining method of access is via expensive local boat landings. More signs warning than welcome. Maybe the locals should get a PR firm to encourage rather than cower and intimidate the visitor

This was the most disappointing experience we had in NZ. Walking track is closed with no future plans of fixing it. The only way to see Cathedral Cove is by boat around $80pp. The weather was terrible so decided not to bother. We drove 3hrs to get there and was a waste of time.

Inaccessible, path no longer there and rockfall still possible. Only access is by boat.
May not be fixed for a long time yet.

Due to the cyclone in january 2023, the path to walk to cathedral cove is damaged and too dangerous to do. It is closed. The only ways to get there is by boat (taxi who come and go pretty often) or boat tours. Beautiful scenery though

Closed until further notice. Unfortunately, due to the cyclone earlier in the year the the walk and access have been closed. The only way to see it is from a boat, and our cruise was cancelled due to bad weather.

We used the park and ride service to get to the start of the walk. The walk itself is undulating but pleasant and the cove was pretty. However, it was very busy so come at dawn/dusk if you want tranquillity and good photos.

Tremendous views and well looked after paths. The weather was extremely challenging but the condition of the paths meant that the walk was safe to do

Originally we intended to take a taxi but due to sea conditions, the taxi service was not available. So we decided to hike to the cove. I have knee injury so I could not enjoy but my children had a great time hiking back and forth. Lovely scenery, safe path and tons of IG-worthy look-out points.
The cove itself was clean, we went there during high tide and had a great time. Good to take extra clothes, a beach towel and some drinking water if you are going to hike to the cove.

We stayed in hahei and did the walk from the beach. Really well maintained track. We went in morning to get the morning sun effects with photos. We done it in 2 hours but would have loved to spend a little more time on beach but we had to go. Only tip is to get there around the low tides to get access to cave easier. Can walk back to town centre via carpark and get your coffee fix. About 45 mins walk from cove

THE TOP CARPARK IS CLOSED( only drop offs allowed). So, what we did was park at the big carpark on the left as you are about to enter the settlement. It cost $7 return for the bus to take you to the top carpark.- it saves you a BIG steep walk for 1/2hr. Well worth it for us as my wife has a bad back and steep slopes are very painful…..
Saying that the path walk to the cove is doable but quite tiring. A consistent pretty steep gradient up,screwed with the wife’s back in no time- but she progressed and got to the 100(?) stairs to get down to the beach.
In Summary!!- if you have injuries, make the decision, knees, back unfit…. Take your time and you’ll enjoy it.
Alternatively, if you continue to drive through the settlement to Hahei Beach carpark you can get a boat to the cove (???$20 each way) from the beach to see it from a different perspective.
In all honest it was ‘nice’ after a far bit of travel it wasn’t a ‘wow’ from us. But nice walk ( for me ha!).
