About
Briar Ridge Vineyard is a 5 star winery nestled in the Mount View region of the Hunter Valley, a well renowned viticultural area. Originally owned by Murray Robson, the vineyards were first planted in 1974, and known as the 'Squire Vineyard'. This Iconic Hunter Vineyard was purchased in 1988 by Dr John Davis which makes up one third of his vineyard resources located throughout Australia which also includes Orange in Central NSW and Wrattonbully on the Limestone Coast. We are one of the leading producers of iconic Hunter Valley wines and have been awarded numerous accolades on both the National and International Wine Show Circuit. This is reinforced by our 5 star rating awarded by Australia's renowned wine critic James Halliday for 3 consecutive years running 2012, 2013 & 2014. Our Cellar Door is located two and half hours north of Sydney and is open 7 days a week. Offering the full spectrum of wine tasting and sales, we are recognised for our long history in the region and our well established wine club (find out more here). We have recently appointmented Gwyn Olsen as our new Chief Winemaker, a rising star of the wine industry. Gwyn studied Oenology at Roseworthy University in Adelaide, graduating in 2005, completing her first vintage in France, with a further six in New Zealand, and three in the Hunter Valley. She has recently joined an elite group of winemakers after being named DUX of the Australian Wine Research Institute, Advanced Wine Assessment Course 2012. Gwyn also joins the talents of Living Legend 'Karl Stockhausen', a winemaker with over 50 years of experience in producing iconic Hunter Valley wines. We take huge in acknowledging Karl's success by showcasing a range under our brand which typify traditional Hunter Styles; the Karl Stockhausen Signature range includes styles such as Semillon, Chardonnay and Shiraz. In 2007, Karl was officially made a 'Living Legend' one of the six inaugural recipients of the Hunter Living Legends Awards. Briar Ridge is primarily a Cellar Door and online operation, although our wines are distributed to key independent retail outlets as well as on premise venues across NSW.

Wonderful cellar door experience, friendly, knowledgeable, approachable staff as well as exceptional wines :)
Dec. 2021
On Sunday my partner and I went to Briar Ridge for a tasting and a platter. We were guided through our tasting with the wonderful Riley. He was incredibly friendly, knowledgeable, answered all of the questions we had with ease and expertise. He made us feel as though we were the only ones in the cellar door. The atmosphere and the vibe of the cellar door was lovely. I was informed that it was recently redone during lockdown. It has a vintage / rustic / antiquey feel while also being chic and classy. There are lots of relishes, pastes, candles and honeys that you can purchase there as well.

We also stopped in at the Rose Room for a platter and the food and service was exceptional.

Oh and not to mention the wines are amaaaaaaazing!!!! We walked away with a box full.

Beautiful Cellar Door - Recommend you visit
Nov. 2021
Briar Ridge is a beautiful cellar door and we were fortunate to have really comfy chairs for our previously booked tasting. Shannon was very kind and knowledgeable and we were greeted with a platter of local cheese, olives and spreads. Delicious!
After a splash of Sparkling, we stuck to the Varietals range with a foray into the Limited Releases. I liked the Early Harvest Semillon and the 'Dam' Verdelho. They make a Fiano which is a variety that you should try as with the Viognier too. The "Stockhausen" Chardonnay was a standout for me and although I wasn't into reds on this visit the presence of a 'Barbera' belies the Italian heritage perhaps. There are plans to open a charcuterie here shortly which will be a nice addition and they are working on a small house in the grounds...that might take a little longer. Highly recommended.

Perfect Cellar door with amazing wines on a gorgeous property
May 2021 • Family
This was our first visit to the cellar door on a recommendation from a neighboring vineyard and Wow what an amazing experience! We were seated outside on the lovely verandah overlooking a beautiful property whilst enjoying their cheese platter and delicious wines. Tanya looked after us and what an absolute delight she was. Her knowledge, friendless and huge bright smile made us feel right at home. Also the wines we tasted were one of the best in the valley and so became members.
We cannot wait to go back!

Exceptional wine, even better service
Aug. 2021 • Friends
We had a Sunday afternoon spare and picked another Hunter vineyard to do a tasting. And what a great pick it was. We arrived to beautiful country surroundings, without the hustle of the ‘trendy’ cellar doors.

We met Steve and he quickly had us seated and organised. We started with the whites and went right through to the end of the reds and then some. It was almost a worry who was going to drive home.

The wines were superb, and we left with two boxes. They’re were only overshadowed by Steve’s knowledge and guidance, and more importantly his passion for wine. Steve is a huge credit to Briar Ridge, and a gift to anyone lucky enough to enjoy his tasting service. Ask him about his vinyl collection I’d you really want to see a passionate human being!

Fantastic afternoon. Fantastic wine. Only topped by fantastic service. Highly recommend if you want the true Hunter experience, not the glossy trendy brochure experience.

If anyone makes a better verdelho, Shiraz, or can sav, fight me

Brilliant wines in a pretty location
Jul. 2021
One of my favourites since the 1980s, Briar Ridge still retains its small vineyard charm, while providing a professional experience. We had a lovely relaxed wine tasting on their deck (rugged up, but so pretty). Friendly, knowledgeable staff took us through a sensational range of wines, culminating with a brilliant Shiraz comparison. We took quite a few home with us!

Came with friends and found it lacking of certain aspects. When we arrived the road was getting re-tared and while walking up the hill (not a problem) we were getting yelled at by the workers to move, while I understand this isn’t necessarily their problem it gave me uncertainty walking in. The wines were good and would highly recommend the Viognier, but I felt there was a lack of connection between us and the staff. It felt like it was more “here is your wine” rather than a more personal one on one experience.
